Just seems weird someone would 1 an album then say it has a banger, even if I hated everything else I usually try to give the extra half star for that banger's sake

1 denotes awful, i don't know why you'd 1 something you don't think is awful all the way through but perhaps I'm built different

if Confusion Is Sex by Sonic Youth had A Day in the Life by The Beatles as the 4th track it would still be a 1

well that's because the beatles through a modern lens just haven't aged that gracefully outside of like an album's worth of greatest hits

about 80% of beatles songs i know even the "experimental" era genuinely just sound the same to me. different structures, sure, but the instrumentation of say, abbey road, is not super far removed from the days of "I Want to Hold Your Hand" that people claim was their simple / bad days
i defo get why they were loved at the time (counter-culture, rebellion, catchy songs, their ability to write an earworm), but i expected a lot more weirdness when people told me they got weird and experimental as time went on, iron butterfly's "in-a-gadda-da-vida" is weirder than almost every beatles song i know

it is okay to not love the beatles but takes like that just reveal you have a bad ear for music

i expected a more radical shift, like i just don't hear what people described as a "whole new band" from what they said was the "shitty simple" days of songs like I Want to Hold Your Hand. they got better at writing but they're still the same band at the core. i don't see how a song like Imagine is so much worse than all the prime Beatles songs but the average is way lower.

there are vast differences in the songwriting and composition of their later work compared to their earlier stuff that are pretty remarkable even without factoring in the time period it existed in and how short their career was overall. to not care for them is one thing, to not hear the shift just shows a lack of perceptiveness

“about 80% of beatles songs i know even the "experimental" era genuinely just sound the same to me”
You have never listened to the Beatles then, because there is no universe where you could say that there is no creative differences between an album like Help to something like Sgt Pepper, that’s just disingenuous .
I’m not like a Beatles megafan or anything but they are incredibly important. Abbey Road and Sgt Pepper are two of my rare 5s, and both are so different but satisfying.
