tbh I only know the original 151...

Couldn't care less about technique if the vocals are listenable but the vocals on here just sound so bad to my ears.

nah jamie you make a really good point. i usually only complain about technique when i don't like the vocals and need a concrete reason to blame it on, lord knows most of my favorite singers are technically abysmal

I don't even know if could make a statement about vocal techniques and some of my favorite vocalist don't have the easiest voices to listen to at first, but this guy...

your username indicates that you really like overblown prog so excuse me if i don't take your opinions seriously

He's rather undeveloped vocals kinda add a smile inducing charm at some points though. It's not the kind of technically "bad" that irk me.

That username came from a long time ago. Not that big on Dream Theater anymore. Do love me my fair share of overblown prog, of course. That is not this. Progressive music ≠ inherently overblown.
Edit: Actually, we both like the album, it's only a question of degrees. Sorry for picking an argument.

this isn't overblown so much as it's just overly long. plus at a lot of points the instrumentation is put on the backburner so we can hear some primo wispy voice.
don't get me wrong, I like this album. I just don't like the cleans, and I don't like some of the songwriting.
