I always think of people whom shrug off sub genres as "no big deal" as lazy people. I love having sub genres and like others have said it is a necessity to find the sound you're looking for.

It can definitely get over the top. I used to tag things as like "progressive thrash metal" and "technical death metal" but now I just like to keep it basic.

technical thrash metal seems kind of redundant anyway

yeah but I'd rather just have it as thrash or prog, not both.

"progressive" and "technical" are really just descriptors

"I'm just a stickler which is why I tag everything so strictly."

Regular thrash and prog thrash are different enough to warrant a sub genre imo. That's like saying prog rock should just be called rock.

it's true that it just affects you, thank odin, but fuckin 407 genre tags is still too damn much for an individual music listener. I listen to music from all over the world and am not close to that number. being organized with genres is one thing but 407 is something else.

yeah actually thats one thing that really annoys me with itunes is that you can only have 1 genre tag.
i want to use a different media player but i use a mac and have an iphone so im kinda stuck with it.
is there even any other good media players on mac?

I feel that with tagging music is, if I can't make a playlist with a genre that has less than 3-4 albums/bands then it's pointless for me to keep it as such any further. as an example: me thinking "I'm gonna listen to some black/classical/doom" that turns out is just one album I have is stupid. I'd throw that in with black/doom or whatever-the-fuck. associating the classical part in mind is quicker than doing the whole absurd process in itunes.

I'm sometimes pretty anal about genres but other times I don't really care that much, it's weird. I mean I have a load of stuff in my iTunes simply tagged as "electronic" when I could be way more specific.
