Sabbath's most underrated album, but far more satisfying than the simplistic 'Paranoid' and even darker than the grim 'Master of Reality'. The power of this album is that it is not as radio-accessible as previous Sabbath releases. If you are a Sabbath fan at all, once your esoteric tastes have grown past merely bobbing your head to 'Paranoid', you seek more spirited material which 'Volume IV', 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' and the first side of 'Sabotage' (forget that the second side exists) supplies amply. Supernaut (perhaps my favorite Sabbath tune) and Cornucopia are the outstanding songs, but the whole vibe of the album is deeper and darker, more emotive and less carnival-of-the-damned theatrical as previous releases.

'Snowblind', 'Wheels of Confusion' and 'St. Vitus Dance' are also very solid tunes, but it is 'Laguna Sunrise' that is the most surprising. It is, without a doubt, Sabbath's best slow song, very idyllic and pastoral, so much so that it was mistakenly used as the soundtrack for a Christian inspirational minute that appeared at the close of each television broadcast day in the late seventies and early eighties (right before The Star Spangled Banner)! On a bleaker note, I am deducting a 1/2 point for the song 'Changes' which rivals only 'Am I Going Insane' as the worst Sabbath tune during their classical period.
