I want to like this more than I do, it’s simply quite good. I’m not against simple structures generally though.

It's one of the most overrated albums I can think of...but I still like it. It might be my least favourite of all their albums though...and it's a mid rating 3.5 for me.

Oh, so is their other stuff quite different then?

Pygmalion is v different tbh

Pyg is the best one and very different. Very sparse, patient and pretty (in an unconventional and distanced way).
But even the recent comeback album is less '90s wash' shoegaze (not my favourite genre, bit indistinct/same'y/wimpy vocals) and far preferable imo - has more bollocks and a certain crystalline feel to the sound

I love the new album but it feels a bit too clean - it mostly lacks the aura of mystery that this one has. Pygmalion is their second best though for sure and is highly recommended for anyone who thinks this is a bit too simple in the songwriting department. All of their albums are growers too so I recommend patience - I once had this at a 3.5.

The new one is fine but feels more like a (much appreciated) excuse to listen to dream pop that isn't Beach House in the 21st century than anything else

One man's 'aura of mystery' is another's indistinct and typical shoegaze mush :3

Cmon, Sing and Souvlaki Space Station have got a mysterious vibe going

"Aura of cuddles" is how I'd sum up this album, feels like a warm blanket

3.5 equates to 'an excellent album' for me so honestly I do like the album...but I just prefer the other three maybe.
'Here She Comes' and 'Alison' are both real good. It's stuff like 'Souvlaki Space Station' I can sort of take or leave a bit.

What's your fav shoegaze?

Album Rating: 3.5
Not sure exactly what counts...is 'Siamese Dream' shoe gaze-y enough?
Otherwise 'Loveless' which I have on a 4.5, and it is very good, but will never receive the 5 rating bump.
Beyond that maybe Catherine Wheel 'Chrome'...and recently I've been getting into Kitchens of Distinction who benefit from being a mix of two styles (jangle pop/indie pop and shoegaze). Rollerskate Skinny are alright too.

Quick exercise for everyone: go to the RYM chart for shoegaze...honestly it thins out crazily quick for a genre people make quite a fuss over/get all misty eyed with.
There are the five 'big' albums - then you have My Vitriol and Silversun Pickups in the top 50.
The top 50.
Of all time.
Yikes.
