I actually loved the musical-like style of this and the Six Degrees t/t, it's a real shame The Astonishing (while being in a similar vein) is so ... bland. I even enjoyed some song on that album

Yep! I love how everything is on display here. I like more subtle lyrics, too, but this works really well.

They seemed to be in a zone on this album, everything sounds awesome and I like how songs like Beyond This Life change, change and change and how it flows. I don't think it's possible for them to make an album that's better than this.
And is that James LaBrie talking on some songs like Regression? His talking voice is really soothing and it calms me down. And all this criticism about his singing, I think his vocals are solid on this album.
I think it's better than Awake, the only other album I have of them (even if songs like Erotomania belong to my favourite songs of them in general but Awake has some flaws).

I don't know why but whenever I'm listening to some songs off Awake (especially Erotomania and The Mirror) I want to play SNES games again (via emulator on pc). I want to play some RPG like Chrono Trigger or Secret Of Mana. Crazy I know.

Wasnˋt sure if this was still a 5 to me not long ago tbh, but then I relistened to it again and all doubt has been buried beneath the brilliance of this composition. This one will be an unwavering 5 to me for all times. Just like Awake and I&W.

i am one who doesn't hail Awake in the same regard as images or this.....first 3 songs on that album aren't ranked anywhere near the top from a discography standpoint for my personal liking
with that though, voices and space dye are both top 10 dream theater songs for me
