"I just look for stuff that appeals to my tastes. Some "obvious" releases just don't seem like stuff I'd enjoy, so I skip. For example, that Vektor album may be the #1 rated album on Sputnik, but thrash metal really isn't my thing, so I probably won't end up checking it. On the other hand, the new Charles Bradley record has gotten next to no hype on here, but I checked it because he makes a kind of music that appeals to me and I ended up loving it. "
heres the actual logical way to go about things

I honestly just listen to anything. I'm always open minded to releases from genres I love and genres I'm unfamiliar with
I would get started on Coil's discog and some black metal albums I missed this year if I haven't committed myself to 7 days of Emmure

"^that's part of the reason i don't have a ton of time/mental willingness"

http://rateyourmusic.com/collection/CasaBlacka/stag/need+to+listen+to/
this is the list im going by to listen to records and i just have a little generator that pulls up a random number and letter and then i pick whatever album coincides with said result. I just add anything that looks cool, I was rec'd, or anything i see that Potsy, Ferro, Toad, or Sinternet rate that looks good since you all have the best taste here.

I'm likely the only person ever but Boris With Merzbow's Gensho is my AOTY. Not sure I'll ever come across another album this year that'll send me on a trip like that one continuously gives me

Gensho is great but the merzbow disc is useless

Its really interesting seeing how people go about listening to new music. I used to stick to the genres I knew well but recently just tried whatever was rated half decently on sput from genres i'd not tried to get a bit more variety. Though this means I've basically listened to none of the 'essential' 2016 releases, I'm mainly checking stuff from the last 20 years.

trying to get listening to more stuff from the 70s-90s because i barely have ANYTHING rated in that time frame

I checked a bit of 70s bowie, it was a good life choice. Other than that all my ratings are unfortunately 1990s onwards, shame on me

ive got a decent bit of 90s in my taste. but the majority of the 2000s is where my ratings lay.

tis the unfortunate curse of being 20 (thats my excuse anyway)

Yeah I've pretty much stopped listening to new releases beyond new albums by artists I like and stuff in genres I like that is really well received because there's far more great music from the past.

I dont know, I think some artists in the present are being just as innovative as those in the past (death grips, in my opinion anyway). But I generally agree, there seems to be a lot to enjoy in the past that I need to check

But I mean just statistically speaking there is like 50 times more good music that has already been released than will be released in 2016.
|
| |
Album Rating: 4.5
Maybe a bit less because more music is being released today than 50 years ago but you get the point.

Album Rating: 4.0
Fair point yeah, as i said earlier I've barley checked any of 2016, been focusing on stuff on the 90s and 00s instead

this decade is the best decade to be alive for music. until the industry subsequently crashes in the 20s and 30s and then all music is subverted to bandcamp lo-fi folk records rip.

Best in the sense that anyone can easily access 95% of all music ever released certainly, in terms of quality of music being released I wouldn't say so.
