kinda weird random thought but the new turnstile single kind of unlocked king nothing for me in that i realized it is also extremely similar to a past hit single with lyrics that reflect on the the bands' success.
the black album set them up for life financially and put them on top of the world but also greatly exasperated their drug/alcohol problems and prob largely contributed to like every member getting divorced in that time period. in that way i think the enter sandman reskin on king nothing is a lot more purposeful than i initially thought, and coupled with the lyrics it feels like the song is about exactly that.

I figured they were set for life after the black album. Was it the touring or the appearances that kicked their addictions into a higher level? Obviously there was the Napster fiasco.

I think they all got divorced during the black album sessions iirc? but the never-ending tour to support it certainly wouldn't have helped.
re: King Nothing - fuck yeah y'all that song has always ruled and I don't care what anyone says. I seriously wish they would put out an album in this vein, let James croon again and dial the speed back a bit. There's a couple rippers on the last two albums but the bloat and pandering gives the albums some legit go-away-heat with me.
re:Until it Sleeps - I've said it all over this thread but this song is godly. The music video debut literally, honestly, changed my life at ten years old. It's still creepy af. Amazing track.

i am very very interested to see if they put out a big giant deluxe 30th anniversary boxset for load/reload like they did the first 5 albums. next year would be the year!

I'd have to jump on it probably. ReLoad is the worst thing they ever did so I really hope they aren't wrapped up in a package together.

I am really critical of Load but the best here is so fucking good. If they actually took all best songs from here and the good stuff from Reload to, that album would easily be better than The Black Album.

only songs i'm taking off reload are fuel, memory remains, fixxer and unforgiven 2

yeah this album/era more than any other is ripe for a boxset. was around this period where lars created the website and really got the fanclub going so there's a lot of really cool high quality shit out there that's been sorta lost to time. the fan cans, so what magazine, also tons of random footage of them writing and recording these songs can be found on youtube which would be cool to see organized into a coherent documentary.
would also love to read/watch a modern day interview of what they think of this era 30 years later. plenty of clips from the 00s of james saying "load kinda sucks, but bleeding me is good!" but given the lyrical content of the album and how much 72 seasons flirts with this sound i have a hard time believing that was anything but fan-service. i think they prob way underestimate how much their fanbase digs this era these days

Until It sleeps is an amazing song and there are some other legit tracks. I really like 2 x 4, The outlaw Torn (especially the S6M version is amazing) and wasting my hate are neat!
This album is really underrated by all these conservatives that want to hear the same stuff over and over and over ad nauseam.

@futures just read. kirk is such a down to earth guy. crazy how after all these years he can barely contain his excitement for music.
most surprising thing from that interview for me was his very early adoration for sub pop and his close relationship with the nirvana guys even before nevermind.
interested to hear his solo album... which seems slated for 2026 and will even have vocals on it apparently. i do vaguely remember his solo ep from way back when being interesting and not at all what one would think a kirk hammett solo project would sound like

kirk seems like the most chill dude ever for sure. best shown in some kind of monster when james and lars are screaming at each and he's just sitting there like a kid when mom and dad are fighting lol

Oh wait, this is Load. This is probably all terrible, actually.

Halfway through that Kirk interview and yes he sounds like he still cares but he also sounds like an absolute cretin. Try and find a single sentence when he's not saying "bro"
