Had a discussion with me best mate last night, and he reckons this was the album that completely blew his mind when he first listened to it more than any other because it was so different to anything else at the time.
He has a point but it’ll always be Nevermind for me.

I can only imagine how Nevermind must have effected people back then. I can only say that it didn't hit me that hard when I first listened to it some years ago.

It isn't my favourite album of the '90s, but it's definitely in the conversation for best album.

There is nothing to compare Nevermind to since. It was The Beatles, Nevermind The Bollocks, Bowie, Dylan, Elvis. An absolute cultural revolution in 40 odd minutes of loud raucous pop rock which changed everything to a certain degree.
Parents hated it but understood it, iconic as fuck. My mum reckons that Cobain was the last true legendary rock star and she digs The Who, hates Queen preffered Stones to Beatles (who she reckons were shite) so she knows what she’s banging on about

As a school kid at the time can confirm both this and 'Nevermind' kicked off the '90s more than anything else for the young 'uns and killed much of the interest in the old guard of U2 and Guns n' Roses.
I've not seen anything similar since in the mainstream other than maybe Oasis and Radiohead - but both in a slightly different way, not quite the seismic impact.

'Nevermind' and 'RATM' pretty much determined all the rock trends for the next 6 or 7 years.
Considering Guns n' Roses (who were BLOODY HUGE let us not forget) only really managed to change trends for about 3 years puts it in context.

See I’d say Oasis were bigger but it wasn’t the same. That danger wasn’t there with them, that ‘tangible’ feeling that something different had been unleashed. They were just a fucking massive band.

I couldn't abide Oasis, they weren't 'rock' in my mind back then, so they were the enemy - but they were massive in the UK
Not liking Oasis was a big thing, half the people you met now hated you. I've never recovered from all that rejection thinking about it now...
