Reconstruction Site is good and all but cmon Johnny
Also I've never really thought of TDAG as "indie" but I won't disagree it's on a comparable level of quality

Nux vomica? ain't that a kinda plant? plants can't play guitar
also
"vaguely contemp. emotionally driven treatises of guitar indie"
Staff reviewer status has finally enveloped Johnny's brain
look what they did to my poor boy...
|
| |
I guess my parameters for "indie" are a lot narrower than a lot of people's tho, like for example the flaming lips are not indie in my mind so even though they have like 3 albums I like more than this I stand by my original statement
Tangential note but I actually went through my music library the other day and re-tagged everything that was categorized as "indie rock" because I don't think it's actually useful as a genre descriptor.

Sounds like a lot of effort.
Just use it to mean "independent rock."
Just as god intended.
|
| |
and so it once was
and then modest mouse signed to a major label
and made an album about isaac brock's thoughts and feelings about his life and death in the modern universe
and it was alright, the band was altogether [indie]

🙏 Amen.
I know it's not a catch-all, but aside from the few albums that are dubiously indie (this being one of them), all the actual indie rock I listen to is on indie labels.
Gotta have faith in your taste.
|
| |
Still, I don't really find that a practical categorization, like what does describing something as "independent rock" actually tell me about what a band or a song sounds like? Can a non-indie act write an "indie song"?
For the record I have the same issue with "alternative rock" and many subgenres of hip hop ("east coast hip hop", "conscious rap", etc.)
|
| |
Alternative rock is in the kinda prog territory where new stuff only gets called alt rock if it's derivative of alt rock (and therefore usually sucks for days)
Indie ig works insofar as it references stuff that is actively not top-stream chart mainstream, but also it's unhelpful because literally everyone is consuming literally everything all the time and the indie market is big enough to be its own mainstream now
|
| |
Exactly. Calling Tame Impala or Mac Demarco indie is useful insofar as it describes the cultural niche they occupy and the demographics they're popular with but if we're discussing their actual sonic pallette I'm going to call them neo-psych or bedroom pop or something that actually evokes a musical aesthetic

back up to the ol 5. foundational high school record for me glad its holding up
night on the sun def needs a home somewhere here tho. i have it in place of rat since that's a slight step down, already on parlour tricks and the acoustic outro on night flows so nicely into the start of lives
|
| |
night on the sun would be so good on this
rat is awesome tho

Yeah, this is a fucking masterpiece. Getting pumped for my twice a decade Modest Mouse discography relisten, in preparation for their very mediocre new album, which I'll fucking love anyway because it's Modest Mouse.
It's a sacred time for me.

used to like this more than tlcw but i think now tlcw has overtaken this. both 5s tho so

TLCW is like a 4.8 because Truckers Atlas is three minutes too long. It what it is.
|

tlcw takes a massive dump on this and flushes it down the toilet of mediocrity
