yeah, RDJ is definitely the sort of "founder" for this style, but i feel like Autechre and Boards
took it in separate yet kinda symmetrical directions.
AE is more cold and calculated, explores less spiritual themes and is generally much more mechanical
sounding. darker in tone, more suffocating and creepy and just... kinda robotic, but still retaining
emotional resonance. BoC's sound is lighter, (generally, i mean they get quite dark) a lot more
curious, colourful and human on the other hand. their sound also feels more liberating as opposed to
the brooding nature to a lot of AE's works.
the balance between the two of them is kinda interesting imo. it's like technology vs. nature in a
way. i mean it doesn't really matter but it's something i've noticed after listening to a fair bit
more AE

TH is the most solid for me with some deep stuff going on. The cut and spliced 70s stuff of the other albums still rocks my world though.

it definitely aces the empty dystopia mood. not quite as big and psychedelic as their first 3, but i admire them for doing what they want and goin more minimalist and ambient. really didnt expect it but damn did i enjoy it

you dont hear it? its easily their most minimal effort. I think its a key to the sombre atmosphere they pulled off there.
maybe subtles a better choice

the other albums had [louder, more prominent use of] drums but it's still around the same level of grandiosity I hear from them

I can imagine that on the more ambient tracks (sans Sundown and Semena) that if they opted on putting
on interesting drum programming that they would be on some Geogaddi level shit
same if you imagine OUT the drums in their other albums that they'd be almost as good as the tracks
I'm talking about

All this BoC banter has given me cause to spin TH again. I swear the thing just keeps getting better and better. Beyond classic.

it seems like the lack of drum programming variety or bombast is sorta what makes me hear it as slightly more minimalist, but i guess its just one of BoCs clever little "tricks" dudes are goddamb wizards. it would almost lose its atmosphere if it had more dynamic drum loops. they can get a bit stale at points though.
the slightly more lofi production and flatter sounding mix might attribute to it too, but that might just be me

edit: idk there is a minimalist side to this but the techno they're known for is more present than any
claims of minimalism
