If we're still talking about Opeth they're primarily a prog metal/prog rock band, but obviously a lot of their albums would be considered prog death metal and even black metal on the first 3 albums.



Wouldn't classify them as a dm band though.

but it is helpful to describe the music, and there's actually a pretty good variety in song-stucture in style among metal bands. iron maiden and immolation are both metal bands but really don't sound anything alike

I'd never argue the fact that there is a lot of diversity to be found in metal (or any other genre but the sub-genre thing is very developed in metal) but I think putting everything into it's own box is just unnecessary. Just listen to this album and decide if you like it.

A few broad genres would be more than enough.
