All I can say is in the UK, when you turn 18 you can do whatever the hell you want. No one would care who you’re sleeping with. I guess in the US it’s different and you’ll always feel different about it because you live somewhere where you can go shoot someone at 18 but can’t buy a Smirnoff ice until you’re 21

brother, this is not about defending the honor or purity of women. I literally said I would find it less weird if someone at the ages we are talking about hooked up with someone who is 18 or 19 or whatever legal age you're talking about than outright dating them. I have no problem with teenagers fucking each other and think that sex is far too taboo in the states and we need better sex ed and all that jazz. This is not about sex.

This is me saying that the massive imbalance of emotional and mental maturity makes the whole relationship extremely weird and more akin to having a pet than a partner. It goes for men, women, nb's, whatever. A 19ish year old DATING someone who is 30 is really fucking weird and something that I don't think is okay

Okay well I wouldn’t care, I really don’t care about other people and what they do so long as they’re both consenting adults. I really couldn’t give less of a shit who you’re dating, so long as it’s legal. Mess having an 18 year old girlfriend isn’t weird to me. Every other thing the band have been accused of, is disgusting. But I think we can put our disagreement down to the fact we live in country’s with different laws and different views on consent and age gaps

Yeah but those country’s consent laws aren’t as simple as you’re implying. I don’t think anyone under 18 should be sleeping with anyone, but once I turned 18 I was by legal definition, an adult. I was told my parents no longer had to look after me, I was no longer their responsibility. I see 18 year olds as adults because my country has always told me, 18 you’re an adult. In the US you can’t drink until you’re 21, so you’re not treated as an adult until you’re 21. There are still restrictions on your activities until you’re 21. So in the US, you’re not an adult with all your freedoms until you’re 21. I have a friend who lives in London with his girlfriend and 3 university students, one of those students is American. She doesn’t consider anyone an adult until they’re 21. She thinks it’s weird that everyone she’s living with considers 18 to be an adult

I wish people were adults at 18, or at least, I wish that they'd act like it from then on. Sadly there's more to it than being able to drive and drink. But that's my opinion, of course.

You're an adult in the eyes of the law, but I don't think many would consider someone who's 18 to be an adult. Some people can mature quicker than others, but I don't really consider people adults until like 24 most of the time. You just don't have enough of a lived experience to know who you are as a person before then. Just because you can legally drink or fuck doesn't you are mature enough to engage in a mutual relationship with someone much older than you.

Yeah I know, which is why I said it depends person to person. I know 30 year olds who can't cook themselves a meal and still live with their parents. Legal definitions to do with age make no sense, but in my country once you're 18 you're no longer in education, you can either go to university or get a job. Once you're working and earning your own money I think it's fair enough you make your own decisions. If you don't consider people adults until they're 24 then by your estimation I have only been an adult for 18 months, despite me having moved out 6 years ago. It depends heavily on the individual. I believe in individual responsibility, everyone is their own person with their own thoughts and feelings and once you are by legal definition an adult, I couldn't care less what choices you make because in the end if you make a mistake the only person it's coming back on is you
