the amount of 'obvious' records i havent heard is disturbing tbh.
|
| |
if you have time to listen to the most obvious music you have time to not listen to some of the shittier obvious albums and replace them with less obvious ones. not to mention that something obvious doesnt make it essential in any way whatsoever. terrible way to look at music tbh.

id say its important to at least familiarize yourself with the genre essentials for a sense of formality. but your taste should never lean so hard towards stock choices or 2obscure4u less you wish to squander discussion with other members in a community. thats just me, however.

obviously
but again its pretty important to note that like 90% of the obvious sputnik albums every year are absolutely not essential in any way

I just look for stuff that appeals to my tastes. Some "obvious" releases just don't seem like stuff I'd enjoy, so I skip. For example, that Vektor album may be the #1 rated album on Sputnik, but thrash metal really isn't my thing, so I probably won't end up checking it. On the other hand, the new Charles Bradley record has gotten next to no hype on here, but I checked it because he makes a kind of music that appeals to me and I ended up loving it.

Ive been randomizing what I listen to now from a list of about 2000+ albums ive either blindly added based of averages, looks, and if its appealing to me or if i have been directly rec'd them. It makes it a lot of fun for me because ill either get some super cool obscure cuts or some of the 'obvious' stuff i just havent heard yet.

@Toad: wait you base what you listen to off of that?
I just listen to things that sound like they'd appeal to me honestly. Don't care about "keeping up to date" though so I don't know.

It's also cool to not rely entirely on sput for music

I try to get at least 2-3 new albums (at least to me, it can be some older releases) in my earholes a week, though I usually get 4-5 if it's not a busy week.

the amount of albums i listen to fluctuates with time/willingness. Sometimes i can pump out 40 albums in a month sometimes i get 10? (like this month).

Same...kind of. The most I usually get monthly gets to around 20.

"if i only have time to listen to let's say, three or so records a day given my schedule,"
thats a a literal shit tonne of albums, thats 21 albums per week sounds like you have ample time.
" i simply have a better chance of finding something i love if i start at the top and work my way down because i don't have a radically different taste than your average rym/sputnik listener. it's the most logical way to go about things."
yeah thats a pretty logical way to never hear anything out of the ordinary agreed. dont worry tho one day you'll have refined enough taste to be able to find music you'll enjoy without just going off whats trending. it takes time.
