I don’t know what you’re getting at with ‘early or later day Neurosis’ because those are two quite different things. In fact I’m confused generally, probably just me idk.

Glad you’re enjoying this regardless.

I could be mistaken, but weren't they in both these periods heavier than say in the late 90ies to mid 2000s? I wasn't really basing it on their respective music style, but more on a gut level. Meaning how heavy it felt, rather than the artistic style they employed. Does that make any sense?

To be more precise, i kinda dig the run from Time of Grace to Given To The Rising, not so much everything before or after. My favorite from them is The Eye of Every Storm - that's their most Panopticon/Salvation/SATH/Oceanic like record

Not really. TEOES is prolly best Neurosis, along with TSIB.

Finland was my introduction to Post Metal, I fucking love that song. A friend from Germany sent me a link to that live show in London, he knew I was gonna dig that shit. Same guy who told me about Mouth of the Architect, what a legend

Finland was my intro to CoL too. Already listened to Isis back then, so it was really a no brainer

tEOES is their pinnacle for me, even though I don’t gravitate towards any one ‘era’ of Neurosis - I think you’re good there as it’s held in such high regard amongst fans.

The early 90s stuff is very different and not ‘heavier‘ necessarily, but faster and closer to their punk roots. I don’t get what is heavier about latter day Neurosis. ‘Honor‘ and ‘Fires‘ build upon many of the stylistic ideas from their ‘atmospheric‘ era they’re most known for, and are often less punishing (to me) than their past efforts. TSIB especially is absolutely crushing at times and that one is right in the middle of their atmospheric peak.

Tbh i didn't take the time to greatly digest why i didn't like it, it was a gut reaction. I still think that the last two records felt heavier than the ones i mentioned though. And yeah their early days pretty much were hardcore punk, so not heavy in the sludge way, but still much heavier (to me) than say TEOES or even ToG. But then again, it doesn't bother me in other bands, say in Mastodon or Meshuggah. Idk everyone has their pet peeves

Yeah I didn’t know if you were including Souls/Enemy in with the early stuff, the first two are more hard-hitting in terms of consistent relentless energy - the punk elements could be perceived as being heavy I guess. Not as much room to breathe etc. Although to be fair they played around with extended atmospheric passages as early as TWIL, you can definitely trace the progression that resulted in Souls’s revolutionary post sound anyway.

I’m blabbing now, forgot this the SATH thread, lol. Enjoy yourself ocean, two of the absolute best bands ever made.

Reminds me that I have to go on a Neurosis discog run soon. I have criminally overlooked that band for whatever reason.

I'm sure it is. Last time I decided to do something similar was for Enslaved and they ended up being one of my fav bands.

Pick one really. Would say Axioma, Vertebrae or Below the Lights are all solid starts.
