I wish I could suggest Mikael to change the topics of his lyrics. I'm into the surreal stories like Genesis get em out by friday or home by the sea.

not sure if derivative was the right word.
lemme put it this way: they’ve always borrowed liberally from artists that they like

"The funniest thing I ever seen was when the dog rolled up the roof backwards, swear to God I laughed for 5 years straight"
Agreed, you hoser

Ah, the old ones were quite unique imo.
But the derivation(?) was amped up by several factors on their progs. As an old idiot I think it helps to never having heard e.g. Camel or Tull before. Because they do it so much better.

i mean aside from the obvious camel ripoff in benighted... parts of the Moor are lifted from an abba song and piti 2 is a nick drake ripoff
i’m sure there are more but my knowledge of 70s prog is extremely limited

Well you got me on the Abba reference.

What Abba song did they lift in The Moor? Or are you joking? And to be fair PitI 2 is a bonus track. Their main progressive metal sound is amazing and very unique, so I think it's forgivable to have a couple ballads be reminiscent of 70s prog bands, especially given how derivative and unoriginal the rest of progressive metal can be as a whole.

Don't know which parts/which song he means but I love ABBA. And we know for a fact Mike does too.

I have to be frank about it I did not like Sorcerass. See the way I spell the title? It isn't a personal insult to Michael but I think Akerfeldt has lost his touch. A unique band traded in everything unique about themselves to be a tribute act. It's lame.

Still better than Heritage, mostly because it's darker.

Pale Communion is darker than both I think. At least, emotionally and the themes explored are more depressing.

Yeah Pale Communion's the best of the three.

Lol, Heritage is one of their darkest records ever

it sounded so wanky and nothing compared to Damnation to me.

Well, that's because it's not Damnation. It's Heritage.

Damnation seems to have become the arc that i judge post-Watershed Opeth on, because that album is so good.
