I can understand that. I do really like ICV & Heritage but Sorcerer & PC do feel zzz, for me.

Watershed is really unfairly maligned. There aren't really any bad tracks on that entire album and it even has some of their best material I think. And axe fucking tore it up

Its a good album, but the band had done it all before. Incredible production and mix though, probably the most expansive Opeth album in that regard. And yeah Axe does indeed kill it

That's the best way to put it. I haven't returned to it often in the past years so I'd have to refresh my memory a bit
On a separate note, this is Per's masterpiece. His best performance on anything ever

Omair I wholeheartedly agree with all of that! And for sure, Watershed is really good, but it wasn't really new anymore for them or something, can't quite put my finger on it.

If we could compare Opeth's modern era as a new relationship, I think Watershed was the flirting album. They hadn't broken up with their previous partner yet, but they had already fixed their eyes on their new romance. I think it's way more enjoyable than GR. The tracks are shorter and the ideas are more diverse. Each song has a distinct character and structure. GR is top tier, no doubt, but Watershed is more entertaining.

I get what you mean, although I do prefer GR over Watershed in any possible way. But Watershed is surely fantastic too, and such a nice, fun, enjoyable album, a 4.5 in my book; whereas GR is a stone cold 5.0 and will most definitely stat like that forever.
And what Omair said about the keys on GR is SO TRUE OMG I've always adored them and I think it is possibly one of my fave inclusions of keys in metal ever. So so so good.

yeah, I prefer the mellower parts of GR (Isolation Years, Hours of Wealth) and the OH-MY-GOD-IT'S-STELLAR Beneath the Mire, and the keys are a huge reason for that. But c'mon, Watershed has some amazing keys as well (hint: the funky vibez on The Lotus Eater)

also, GR ranks higher for as well because of consistnecy, but I'd rather listen to Watershed rn.

Yeah keys on Watershed are incredible too. Never really was a fan of Lotus Eater though. Hex Omega has incredible keys. Hessian Peel. Burden. Hmmmmmmm. Love it.
Hours Of Wealth might be my fave non-metal Opeth track from before Heritage.
