I mean, I love some songs on The Bends but half of it is super-duper meh. Again, just my opinion, but I could completely do without songs like Just, My Iron Lung, Planet Telex, and Bones.
You could sub a few of the B-sides for those and my overall opinion of the album would significantly improve. Killer Cars, Talk Show Host, How Can You Be Sure

Alternatively, the best songs from Pablo Honey could replace the worst songs from The Bends and the theoretical combined album would probably be preferable to Hail to the Thief for me at that point.

I always thought/said that The Bends was a bit overrated and Pablo Honey a bit under-. Definitely the former is better than the latter, especially from a production standpoint, but they're not SO far apart as is usually supposed

I think Bends is a looooot more mature than Pablo though. In sound, composition, lyrical themes, everything actually. Maybe not production, true.

Oh AND COVER ART. Yuck that sunflower baby on Pablo is silly.

Well, The Bends' cover art isn't much better.

I kind of like the thing they did with test-dummy Thom to be honest. It's very recognisable and might be one of the classic 90s covers even.

But hey, I loooove that album so I'm probably biased haha!

That cover looks like shit compared to almost any other Radiohead cover tho.

That makes a lot of sense, though, because IIRC, many of the songs on Pablo Honey and The Bends were written around the same time. By the time The Bends was released, they had access to better recording equipment so the sound quality is objectively better, but you can tell which songs were written earlier vs. later.

The Bends is fantastic imo. If anything, it’s slightly underrated these days as it’s completely overshadowed by their change in style and the next few superior albums that followed.
