There are very few moments in metal's history that can beat the opening seconds of Angel of Death. Araya's scream still sends chills down my spine. He's the best vocalist in thrash, imo.

If there's one thing I LOVE in SOH is when King & Jeff let the riffs have sustain and "breath". That's not something you meet quiet often in their music. And it's a lot better than having to listen to an endless variation of those chugga-chugga palm-muting riffs.

And on top of that, you have those great inter-breaking beats by Lombardo and you're off to music heaven.

But this they did better in "Seasons".

Seeing these dudes live last year with Testament, Anthrax, Behemoth and Lamb of God was a life changing experience.

I saw them in 2010 in the big four festival. Definitely a day to remember for ever.

Well in terms of keeping it at a consistent intensity and speed the influence of Discharge definitely looms over the record. So if that's what you mean with punk, you're not that wrong tbh. In terms of instrumentation though it's thrash as thrash gets.

This has always been given a weird punk label.

I think people are just struggling with human words when describing this otherworldly album.

Thrash does originate from punk though

Not really. The genre gets the punk attitude, but heavy metal is its main influence.

If you want to understand where thrash comes from, listen to Show No Mercy. Iron Maiden and Priest are everywhere.

Venom, Motörhead and Discharge are often cited as the main inspiration behind thrash. Maybe the Hellhammer demos as well. Out of them, only Discharge could be regarded as hardcore punk but they were already a quite metal-ized version of punk (proto-grind basically).

It's no secret that the heavier and more aggressive strain of punk was a huge influence on the development of extreme metal in general.

...but to call this a "punk album" ? ...

I hear strong influences of Mozart's Requiem here.

Songwriting it's very reminicent to the punk structure it's what i meant, very straightforward, little to no variation or dynamics and "let's get fast and rad as we can every single time and call it a day"

"let's get fast and rad as we can every single time and call it a day"

That's just plain false. Did you even listen to this record except for 'Angel of Death"?
"Altar of Sacrifice" for instance starts out fast before it gradually gets into a more midtempo rhythm. Conversely there are plenty of songs that calmly build up their riffing patterns before going into an all out frenzy: like how about "Jesus Saves" ?
"Postmortem" is a midtempo track for almost the entirety of its runtime before it lets loose in the last minute.

Sure, it's pretty far from being a prog or tech album but to claim that there's basically no dynamics is inaccurate.

I mean, I get where the punk thing comes from, but it was nothing more than an influence on the tumultuous parts of the songs.
