'I know what you mean, for example I like Heritage more than Deliverance and maybe even Orchid & Watershed haha'
I can't get behind the last two but it's still a perfectly reasonable opinion.
On the other hand thinking this is better than anything apart from (perhaps) Pale Communion is just plain silly.

Heritage and PC are growers but this one the opposite, less memorable and a little too bombastic at times. The quieter sections are excellent.

Exactly. I think I love all the quiet sections here, the full-blown hard-rock moments are where this goes wrong for me.
I also have very big issues with the production here, and I think those stem mostly from the louder sections.

like I’ve said i really don’t like the extremely loose song structures and the seemingly random transitions on heritage. i have to same issue with the really early stuff too.

This and parts of PC are just as random, if not moreso, than Heritage but less adventurous and more cheesy.

*Heritage is the worst Opeth album*
Fixed
Granted, the "worst" of Opeth is still a solid 3/5, so it's not like I'm saying it's bad

So untrue though, fixed the wrong way.

It's just such a disjointed and aimless album. There's some incredible stuff in there (The Devil's Orchard, Slither, I Feel the Dark, Marrow of the Earth, and Famine are all great), but I prefer something that flows better from beginning to end

"This and parts of PC are just as random, if not moreso, than Heritage but less adventurous and more cheesy."
yeah but this and pc have much tighter songwriting with a stronger use of melody and *gasp* verse/chorus structures. i don't find heritage adventurous at all as the structures are similar to what they had done before. it's just that they didn't have the distorted riffs and growls to provide any contrast.
btw i'm not trying to shit on heritage as it has a lot of good qualities

Heritage is still very different from what they did before aside from losing the metal. The rhythm section alone gets a total overhaul and is more technical, and the jazz and folk influences are more prominent overall. PC and Sorceress are more conventional and safe, also pandering to metal fans with songs like Cust of Eternity and Sorceress. I like PC and Sorceress but would appreciate if they did something more unique next.

Yep, not a fan of fairly conventional (perhaps derivative) prog/hard rock Opeth, Heritage has bags of creativity & personality that I don’t hear in either of the following records.
|
| |
If there’s a track on Sorceress that’s pandering, it’s Chrysalis. The main riffs are almost exactly like something they would’ve done on Still Life or Blackwater Park. Just imagine it with cranked up distortion and Mike growling over it

opeths music has always been relatively derivative it’s just that it was always sort of masked with death growls and heavy distorted riffs
i personally prefer the more hard rock leaning stuff especially since akerfeldt has gotten much better in terms of writing catchy hooks

I actually agree, and I like some of the more whacky moments like the opening to Sorceress and the ending of The Wilde Flowers. And I’ve said a couple of times that Strange Brew is fuckin rad
