The transition from the last minute of chaos in Ascension Day into the tranquillity of After The Flood, or the complete lack thereof, is probably my favorite moment on any album ever

runeii is the perfect closer
i used to not appreciate the subtler tracks as much but yeah theyre just as good as the heavy hitters

same tho, I used to think Myrrhmann was just an okay opener but now I can't see it as anything but perfect

One of the best openers of all time for me, might even be my favourite on the whole record
|
| |
yeah its the perfect intro to the album
|
| |
minority take but the openers on the previous two LP's are better

eh that's still the mainstreamer take, both of those tracks are more popular

I probably like The Rainbow more, but Myrrhman fills me with skin crawling dread. Big fan.

That first guitar chord rake in Myrrhman is orgasmic

Myrrhman has two moments - the surprising double bass "resolution" at 3:06 and the gorgeous, haunting violin motif (itself a contender as a moment, actually; I correct "two" to "three") getting a yearning piano counterpoint at, ah, 4:29 - that would be legitimate aspirants to the throne of "best moment in music". And that's just the first song. Unreal

For me it’s def when the strings come in with the big guitar scrape, which I guess is not technically the first guitar scrape

Yeah those strings in Myrrhman are one of the greatest things ever recorded. One of several moments on this album that bring me about as close as I get to believing in God.

lmao
Myrrhman is a bore except for that noise at the 1:54-1:55 mark that wakes you up from the snooze the song puts you in. Ascension Day is ok but then we go into After The Flood, a terrible song that overstays its welcome. The last three tracks are much better and do evoke a mood.

this should be played as worship music instead of that super generic schlock that megachurches are obsessed with
all these 5's are accurate but I don't like to 5 on first listen

4.5 for now, but could easily become a 5 with repeat listens. I listened to it on the way home from work, incredibly tired, and dealing with some of the worst traffic of my life, so it may have impacted the listening experience for me LMAO

in my world a 4.5 is a monumental "starting point" and almost used like a minor 5 / 5-lite anyway, so there's certainly no need to defend that stance
I could see an actual 5 in my not-too-distant future but Mark Hollis's solo album is more suited to 'everyday' listening and has become more of a go-to album for me (yes, "why not both?" / they are different enough etc... this is true enough)
