My current fav National song is probably City Middle or Baby We'll Be Fine. Constantly changes, however. The National are miraculously consistent.

I need to check Tindersticks.

Not huge on Tindersticks, though I like them. They're just not as captivating for me as other bands within the genre. It's not them, it's me.

Tindersticks vs The National...tough one, I love them both almost evenly, both make my top 10 bands of all time. They are definitely an example of two bands so incredibly similar you can do the whole comparison thing.
Berninger vs Staples...that's a draw. Staples solo album is better than the EL VY though so maybe Staples edges it for now.
National discog vs Tindersticks discog...National have three 5's, a 4 and a couple more 3+ while the sticks have a 5, two 4.5's, two 4's then about ten 3+ albums lol. I guess you've got to hand it to the Sticks as currently stands, plus their new album is out in January and their last one was a hard 4/5.
Live I've seen the National who were 10/10 but The Tindersticks live album is a decent 4/5. The National rock more so get the edge there I'm guessing.
Favourite songs...Blood vs Sorrow. Lol they're pretty similar, clash of the miserable Titans, draw

my favorite song of theirs is 'my sister', not afraid to admit it made my tear up a bit
also, i think both bands have two solid 5's

'My Sister' is great but limited everyday repeat value, not one you can slip into a playlist.
These are all good albums but Tindersticks 2 is a little ballad heavy for even my standards and I think the live album improves on songs like Mistakes and No More Affairs so can't quite 5 it. Curtains isn't too far behind that one either.
On the National albums we differ a fair bit, Boxer massively improves on Alligator for me, and Trouble I find even more perfect than High Violet but both are 5's.

What has kept The National so consistent is their ability to have each album have a different "feel" than the previous, so while everything they have done sounds exactly like The National, it's never too familiar.
Where should one start with Tindersticks?

Boney you have two choices id say - the first album is a 5 for me and their most diverse. Otherwise go the other route and listen to their latest The Something Rain first to prepare you for the new one dropping in January. Something Rain is a decent 4/5 but has a really odd opening song that's unlike anything else on the album that you might find initially off putting lol
Tindersticks 2 and Can Our Love? are the next ones to try after those two.

go from start to finish is my advice, with any band really (except national ofc)

NSL what's your opinion on The Something Rain? High hopes for their new one?
|
| |
Album Rating: 5.0
Doof: I'll probably start with their first and perhaps try their newest one before their new one comes out.
NSL: I usually go first to last with artists unless they have a new one coming. I'm focusing on catching up on 2015 releases so I wont have time to do the discog before January.

Trying to get to know their whole discog in two months is not advised lol, about 12 albums plus soundtracks etc

Oh yeah lol that wouldn't happen even if I weren't focusing on 2015 releases. Maybe if I were to focus exclusively on them, but I prefer to stagger my listening of discogs anyways.
