All this discourse and time could have been saved if he just kept his sins between him and a priest

I think deferring to artistic legacy makes the most sense, it's basically saying that some people, like Polanski and Brand New, are too acclaimed to cancel, and the same benefit would not be given to less cool, artistically inferior counterparts.

As always with this conversation, I do wonder if all the Brand New/Jesse Lacey apologists who do all kinds of bizarre mental gymnastics to defend listening to Brand New and using the whole “separate the art from the artist” argument would have the same energy when applying the same logic/arguments they’re using to Ronnie Radke…

Even if you separate the art from the artist, Ronnie Radke's art is still dogshit. No one should have ever been liking his music in the first place. That's the whole point – that the quality of the music should dictate the outcome.

That’s the issue, we shouldn't be choosing who to bin and who to support based on how much we like their music. If we continue to celebrate the works of Brand New, it’s setting a precedent and sending out the message that this behaviour is tolerated. When that happens, more bands and people within the scene will perpetuate similar behaviours.

It's not the same at all, those new bands would never get the same pass because those bands would never have Brand New's artistic legacy. In terms of critical acclaim, Brand New set the bar so high that it's impossible for near any other act to replicate that level of adoration. With regards to emo, probably only Sunny Day Real Estate and American Football are on that level.

exactly, that's what I've been saying

if you are paying money into jesse's pocket despite knowing about the allegations, you're a fucking clown

Jawbreaker - Dear You clears any Brand New album as far as I'm concerned.

Artistic legacy is an insane hill to die on to defend someone's grooming and weirdness. Even weirder cuz this guy is singing about it like R. Kelly vaguely would

For sure. Like, I adore both Touche Amore and Thursday. If Jeremy Bolm or Geoff Rickly did the same thing as Lacey, I wouldn't hesitate to drop either band in spite of how much I adore their music and how they've both influenced me as a person and the way I approach writing my own music.

To reiterate, Brand New were one of my favourite bands between the ages of 18 and 24 (when the allegations came out). I didn't even listen to Science Fiction as the allegations came out before the place I ordered my vinyl from got their stock of records. Thankfully I was able to swap it for another album.

i still listen to brand new here and there. they were my favorite band when i was 14-16 years old, when science fiction dropped it was my favorite album of all time. i think jesse is a monster but my prior relationship with his music doesnt really define my morality to myself

but that's where it ends lmao. there's a difference between enjoying something privately and engaging in it's fan culture, and an even further difference between openly acknowledging enjoyment of problematic art while addressing the baggage involved and the way that complicates the relationship vs acting like the quality is the only thing that matters and that music can be good enough that it makes the behavior irrelevant
