chinatown famously being a movie about the crippling guilt roman polanski experienced in the wake of his violations of minors
genuinely baffles me that people are still hung up on vapid art vs. artist distinctions when the meat of the argument has always lain in how much the art reflects the filth of its creator
(from an appraisal/consumption standpoint anyway - the number of people who've crawled out from under their rock to moan about how difficult ticket sales have made it to materially support this band shouldn't surprise me as much as it has)

My comment was mostly flippant at this point. I'm just as tired of this retreaded argument as you.

My thing is people don't know the issues with the accusations such as the ages and timelines of when and how it happened and it makes the situation a hell of a lot more grey than it seems if you just read the NME article. Nicole's entire Live Journal is (or was) online and you could see that her accusation statement didn't match with what actually happened. I'm not going to victim blame here but she wrote constantly about how she lied to every band that came to town that she was 18 so she could get with members of the bands. She was a troubled girl with a rough home life and I get why she was doing what she did but it makes me question what Jesse did or didn't know.
With that said, I'm not about to be Jesse's strongest soldier and pretend it's not terrible that he preyed on younger/vulnerable fans and was abusive towards them at the very least. I hope that he's rehabilitated and he went to therapy for years before the allegations came out. I just don't think it's as simple as screaming "he's a pedo!!!" (present tense) for things he did when he was 23 over 20 years ago, especially when the context of what happened is pretty messy.

Is the context not a little different when the person says they lied to every band that came to town that she was 18 so she could sleep with them? She wrote about it constantly and mentions some of the bands by name and was with Paul from Punchline when he was 5 years older than her. You don't think she did the same thing to Jesse? And that if she was 17 it's not exactly easy for someone to say "wait, you look like you're actually a year younger than 18"?

why are we doing this lmao, there were a handful of stories about jesse once the floodgates opened not just the one allegation. sounds like it was basically an open secret within the scene

I only know of the two specific ones and they're the ones everyone talks about. But yeah you're right onion. My point was that at least one of the two accusations isn't from the most reliable person which makes everything surrounding what happened at least a little cloudier.
That's all I'll say on it because I know I'm starting to make it sound like I'm wearing a tinfoil hat and excusing Jesse of his wrongdoings. In fact I'm still kind of split on how I feel about them coming back because I love their music and have a Brand New tattoo but I feel a little torn on if I want to give them money and support.

I tend to defer to artistic legacy in this case. The meat of the argument should be about how that is the only variable that matters.
Polanski and Brand New made iconic classics. If we were talking about Michael Bay or Taking Back Sunday, that would be different

taking back sundays music aged about as well, the biggest difference if it was them instead is their fanbase wouldnt be as obnoxiously pretentious and try and frame their music as some kind of high art when the dude was penning bars like "you and i are stuck like glue, and thats the goddamn truth baby bye bye"

Unironically yes, Kendrick's "A-minor" disses would not have worked against an actually liked musician. It worked because people already hate Drake for making bad music and thus were rooting for him to be an actual pedo so that his image could be ruined even more.
The main crux of the Kendrick-Drake beef was the high art/low art divide. It was basically Radiohead vs Maroon 5. The pedo jokes were just the cherry on top.
I dislike pop punk and emo in general, Brand New to me is just a classic indie rock band in the vein of Built to Spill and Modest Mouse. So even Taking Back Sunday's old stuff sounds terrible to me.

I would never root for anyone to be a pedo no matter how much I disliked their music. Actual weirdo response!!!
All you had to say was that you don't want to give up Brand New's music

that basically made the point for me that this band is framed as some "classic" indie rock band in the same breath as built to spill and modest mouse when they were mostly just repackaging those influences in a context the emo and pop punk scene could more easily digest. a watering down more than anything else if we're being real
"I would never root for anyone to be a pedo no matter how much I disliked their music. Actual weirdo response!!!"

imagine caring about the image of a pop star to root for him to be a pedo.
