The generalization isn’t strictly the fault of audience ignorance, there are many different genres where artists and labels try to commodify identity politics. Look how successfully straight cis pop stars market themselves as gay icons these days. Identity pandering is a powerful marketing tool. A lot of people do buy right into it because it weaponizes a desire for belonging. Capitalism yall.

It’s a double edged sword because while the prospect of profiting off of exploiting people’s desire to be seen and feel a sense of community and belonging is decidedly transparent and disgusting, the increased visibility is undeniably a net positive and its better than people marketing towards terrible bigoted groups instead at least

You can be an earnest icon and still casually or inadvertently participate in the perpetuation of identity politic pandering. it’s not an inherently bad or good thing anyways, it’s just that it can be weaponized or breed stereotypes

Investigation still underway, but so far there are only two releases that are a) actually folk punk and b) worth half a damn. Weighing up whether Knife Man might also qualify
