Your take isn't unfounded, believe me. Legend bands don't typically regain form after thirty years, realistically. Despite how I feel about Heritage now, I was fiercely disappointed on release.
BUT I don't think it's unfair to be excited for the return of growls alone, which always fucking ruled, even if it doesn't ultimately lead to brutal-peth like so many of us would like. Intrigue is nice.

There’s so much to be interested in with in the new tune. The distortion is up, the riffing is angular, the solos are cranked, the drumming has dropped the 70s aesthetic and is back to some Ghost Reveries/Watershed metal vibes, the growls are back, the Newpeth cleans are uniquely blended with the Watershed era descent into madness. It’s truly its own beast. Every album has been to be fair, but even if you removed the vocals from this track it’s extremely distinct in their discography.

Definitely gives me some of the heavier psychedelic-ish vibes that were present on Watershed. Its a perfect mix of the eerie prog of recent stuff and the crushing dm that they were so damn great at. Sounds like the best of both worlds to me tbh. Not getting the complaints, but hey, different strokes bros.
