I never warmed to this upon release (melodeath was beginning to call in 2003 and Deftones were moving away from their nu metal sound, another love), but I've had it at 3.5 for a fair few years now. Recently started here with a discog revisit and I must have listened to it about 5-6 times, ummming and ahhhing about a 3.5 or a 4. Something kept niggling at me, hinting there was something deeper if I kept digging into the record.

It's a very consistent record, save for Lucky You which should have been a brief interlude.

Only two albums left until I've finished Deftones's discography: Gore and Ohms. This discog binge has been so much fun, I love this band now

Don’t let the low ratings on Gore fool you, with better production I think it would be just as well liked as the rest.

Should I check Gore first or Ohms? This has been a journey; my favorites are Around the Fur, White Pony, and Koi no Yokan if that helps

Personally I like Ohms more so I guess I would save the better one for last. And it’s their newest so not a bad way to end it

First 'Tones record I bought, back when it released.

Been really feeling "Deathblow" again recently. Just in that kinda mood.

hexagram would be in the top 10 songs ever made if the chorus were as good as everything that isn't the chorus

mad about two words in the chorus when musically it still goes hard is a weird hill to die on

i don't recall saying that or anything to that effect

the song has a beautiful booming bombastic picture painting atmospheric sound throughout

then the chorus comes and strips everything awesome away to some barebones chugging that oddly enough is quieter than the rest

i think adding a bit more oomph to the production on the chorus breakdown + some extra electronicals around those chugs would sate me

but maybe it was an artistic decision for it to be unremarkable and take you out of it so the rest hits harder

First I hear someone complain about the chugs but I get it. The chugs (from the bass) match the low end so idk about that. The rest sounds like you could’ve done better and should ask the band to rerecord the record.

hex is by far their hardest song to try and cover vocally
