Haven't heard it in full in awhile so maybe not 4.5 but still probably atleast a strong 4.

different strokes. I don't find much enjoyment in things being catchy or hooky, so that's probably why it falls so short for me.

Yeah, I get that. It has to still retain a solid amount of talent behind it as well for me, or at least have some sort of solid energy to it, like Icon For Hire or something.

I like to be surprised and thrilled, or transported. Swept away in storytelling, challenged by layers and nuance, or lulled into a state of serenity. The latest albums play their hand immediately and it ruins the musical journey for me because it's no longer meant to be a journey. It's intricate on a surface level, with creative musicianship and, well, catchy hooks, but there's no real intrigue beyond that. It's fun and quick, but that's all it is to me.

Yeah, I mean that's why it's still a step down from an album like Leviathan and MAYBE Blood mountain imo, those albums had such immense intriguing story telling as well as having fucking great hooks. I think it could've been better as an album but for going what's sort of the "radio metal" route it's still pretty good.

sure, it's great for what it is, and more power to Mastodon for doing Mastodon. they've earned the right to chill and make boppin tunes if that's what floats their boat.

"Show Yourself" is totally a boppin tune. you can't headbang to it but you can nod and turn your shoulders side to side and tap your steering wheel and it's a decent time.

i'm not sure i understand this discussion very well - this record took a bit more of a streamlined approach but it's hardly worlds apart from what they had already done. it's not like this is deathspell omega or something

This album isn't a much different Mastodon so much as a much simpler Mastodon.

Black Tongue starts off this album so well then it's a slow but sure decline in quality from there.
