Thrash rules. Ez top 3 genre for me
@ryus, never heard it. Melodeath on the whole bores me to death so I assumed this would too

moment i read that made me think you'd invoked a hex and the ewok/orb guy was about to parachute into this thread
shivers
post metal is one of the most top-heavy genres, but the best bands are most of the best metal so ig it squares out
|
| |
1. dm
2. metalcore
3. black metal ig
|
| |
Post is probably not in top 3. Its dm, thrash and probably sludge. There just happens to be a fair amount of sludge/post crossover i have highly rated. But you're correct my top 3 is mostly impenetrable

sludge up top is based tbh, and now i think about it idk if there's a straight-up post metal band i love that isn't sludge crossover
sludge / doom / stoner is the ultimate top 3 but idk if i'm sexy enough to rock that

i don’t even listen to that much black metal anymore. it’s like 90% death metal subgenres and grind.
but yeah it’s easily 1. death 2. grind 3. black and whatever is 4 is waaaay down there.

grind, drone and black are the best +1s probably
|

oh yeah grind is 3rd def

Slaughter of the Soul is in essence a wild, violent roller coaster ride. It is not so much as a good time as a sensational time; the album is enjoyable not because it is pleasant to listen to but because it’s a brilliant expression of rage and pain. It succeeds because it is an experience, not entertainment. It can’t be perfect - it’s too twisted and violent to come anywhere close – but it does such a good job of being imperfect that it’s not far from flawless.

i do like a lot of metal albums that don’t fall in those three categories it’s just I’m seemingly able to listen to almost any death metal and somewhat enjoy it.
a friend and I were talking about this earlier. i really do like almost all genres of music and like the great albums from all of them, but I do have my comfort genres which I can just listen to endlessly and never get tired of. my two big comfort genres are absolutely death metal and techno.

scrolling down the sput alltime chart for post metal and yikes, discounting Kayo Dot and WITTR, the relative interest I have in anything sludge-related compared to anything firmly non-sludge is a revelation and a half

'post metal is one of the most top-heavy genres, but the best bands are most of the best metal so ig it squares out' (2)
...post, death, sludge, doom then probably black by default (none of that recorded on a potato first-wave shite with endless repetition tho), grind is close to black actually, then 'who cares?'
both mdm AND thrash mostly suck. Nobody wins, it has been decided (okay thrash wins for spawning death and having slightly less overall suckage, but yeah, it's close enough)
I refuse to rank prog because honestly it's a mess and I have no idea where to put it, on the sheer number of good things (i.e. ignoring the absurd amount of complete tosh, it'd go above doom). The vague nature of the descriptor doesn't lend itself to being easily ranked tbh

idk how casa can argue for mdm's shitness compared to thrash by postulating that it turned down the aggression. like how is that a good argument. not to mention that thats not even necessarily true, theres a lot of ultra aggressive mdm out there that surpasses most thrash ever made.

rec me ultra-aggressive mdm and I will endeavour to have a (slightly more) informed opinion on the subject

first two soilwork records come to mind first. Alternatively damage done or a lot of hypocrisy's discography. I'm mostly fan of european mdm so there might be much more aggressive stuff from the us.
either way, melody good actually, my point is just that less aggression equals bad is not a good argument but also a fair opinion albeit an unfortunately one-dimensional one.

Oh yeah man I dont care what other people enjoy. Enjoy ur mdm if you can thats what it's all about. Really has nothing to do with anger at other genres it's just boring to me but if you dig it go on with ur bad self
