"Again, considering Pantera was still a straight up hair metal band when Metallica was touring Justice, and were just releasing Cowboys from Hell (which while popular, wasn't anywhere near the seismic shift Vulgar Display was) while Metallica was making this album... I have a very hard time believing Metallica was trying to ride Pantera's wave with tracks like Sad But True. "



Not saying it's true, i personally don't hear pantera in this but you need to think about the fact that bands tour all the time and test their new stuff live. They don't just create new songs for albums ;) The sound constantly evolves.
