Yeah if I rated the blackening I would probably give it a 2 or 2.5. It's basically just Rob Flynn being a tryhard imo

Machine Head’s never been that great anyway imo

But that's not what we were talking about before anyway, more like it doesn't rule quite as hard as most of their other material. I DO enjoy this but it does feel majorly dirty to be 3.5ing a metal Opeth album. It's uncomfortable.

Agreed Pleb, an absolute beaut, from beginning to end. Soft section brings the feels hard.

Haha, Demon, I understand what you mean. It was like that for me for a long time too. But then suddenly it clicked and now I love it like the others. Don't know what changed, maybe I did (how philosophical).

This is easily the most mediocre Opeth album. I don't really enjoy anything after it, but at least there was some fire on Ghost Reveries. This album sounds, and was, rushed, pieced together and bland. It was all written on the spot and that comes across on a majority of it.

Which part?
For me the repetitiveness annoys me but not much of it feels improvised

Album Rating: 3.5
Which part of what? Mike said they went into the studio with nothing. A lot of it is rehashed BWP, stretched out, and yes repetitive. Where are the exciting twists and turns? Think about the progression from Morningrise -> MAYH -> Still Life -> BWP, the creative juices are just oozing throughout each release until it hit this wall. It's a good progy atmospheric death metal album sure, but for them it's just by the books. It's not garbage, but it's nothing compared to the previous releases.

It's definitely more straightforward death metal, but that was the whole point with Damnation being its proggier counterpart. For me the repetition has turned into something very cool and unique for them, it's the odd one in their discog in a way. There's no weak tracks here imo.
Edit: Thrust beat me to it!

@Thrust Sure, yeah but I don't listen them together and I rate it as a standalone album not on the contrast of its counterpart, which would be a 10/10. I honestly prefer Damnation to this because at least they were trying something different with that one, and it worked better in execution. I'm not slamming this album saying it sucks and I am definitely biased. When Still Life came out after MAYH, my expectations were blown away, when BWP came out after Still Life I was completely amazed. When this album came out I was like, eh it's certainly heavy, but where's the magic.

Hmm, yeah, can understand that actually. It's definitely grey and bleak (ha) like its cover.
