Im glad to see that people are still commenting here ;)
I've always been torn apart between Scenes and Awake. And finally after a lot of thinking I can safely say: Scenes are better as an album, Awake has better highlights.
Replayability just doesn't stop for me. And every time "Finally free" tunes in and the murder is coming, shivers appear on my back.
Open your eyes, Victoria.

^These are the classics. That's probably all DT one needs

It depends I guess, Scenes, Awake and Images is not enough DT for me by far. Def need Six Degrees and Falling into Infinity by their side to feel satisfied. And even a bit of Black Clouds to be completely content.

Darn, not to forget CoS, a DT essential.

How beautiful is the last minute or so of Beyond This Life tho? Bliss.

I'll check Six Degrees Of Inner Turbolance, CoS and Falling into Infinity. But I noticed that their newer stuff doesn't do much for me except for some individual songs (e.g. Breaking All Illusions).

A lot of gorgeous parts on here. Spirit Carries On and Through Her Eyes are also heartbreakingly beautiful... It's crazy how good these guys used to be.
And yeah man, check all of the classic era DT stuff. Much to enjoy there.

LaBrie is great here, a shame what happened to him during the tour for this record tho.
Only album he sounds good on after this is Black Clouds, good return to form.

His performance on Six Degrees is amazing imo, but his live performances at that time were truly suffering...

What happened at the tour?
Through Her Eyes is the thing that holds me from 5ing this. It's not bad at all, but too cheesy for me. "I wept just like a baby as I lay awake in bed"

But yeah, it's really a shame that it struck him this hard. Must've been hell for him...

He suffered from food poisoning kind of rupturing his vocal chords at that time. He needed several years to fully recover.
""I wept just like a baby as I lay awake in bed""
Haha yeah, this line is almost unbearable, but the harmonies are just sooooo good.

I thought that happened on the Awake Tour and not while they were touring for this album.
What's the last album of their classic era?

You're right, but his vocals were still really strained on that tour. I remember him freaking out when some guys in the first row were constantly smoking...
Last "classic" DT is Six Degrees, but that's just my opinion of course :]

I might add Six Degrees to my initial list, definitely the songs Octavarium and A Change of Seasons but yeah those and Awake/Images/Scenes is really the only Dream Theater I absolutely love and the only Dream Theater I really ever listen to.
Still a lot of material, though.

Fuuuhhhck. The lyrics may be on the nose but that's probably part of why the concept works so well. This is such a fucking masterpiece, even with it's imperfections
