yeah I'm a literature major, and have studied controversial classics like Lolita and Paradise Lost and Howl and Once Were Warriors and Ariel, works of art that exercised freedom of speech and kicked up a fuss for all the right reasons

literally all of my courses talk about the evil of censorship so if there's some connection here you're drawing I'm not sure what it is

if the bar was higher and Zappa's lyrics had even a fraction of the complexity of those works then yeah I'd agree

sonic asked me if I'd ever read literature (and the controversial works therein), and I responded in truth

Zappa's bar for lyrics were pretty damn high on Freak Out! and We're Only In It for the Money

Also speaking of Howl... Allen Ginsburg was fucked up honestly and openly supported the pedophile organization NAMBLA so fuck him

is there a Zappa album where his social commentary is above the standards of a 10 year old boy, I'd actually love to hear it

if he had mentions of pedophilia in Howl I'd understand, but to look at his personal life and swear off of everything Ginsberg wrote is ridiculous

You're really not giving Zappa enough credit. Crass doesn't mean uneducated.

But here's the best example of an intelligent Zappa song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDicDZr0c50

If you are going to criticise a piece of art, look for examples within the text itself, don't read a wikipedia article and decide you hate the artwork based on what the artist did years later.
