Nonsense. Brat has a fair amount of filler. This has none. But we all have our own ears, emotions and thought processes, I'm not gonna convince you and you're not going to convince me. I think I'm done here...

Awww... you sucked me back in.

"...how choppy, short and abrupt almost every song is..."

Yes. Yes. YES! That's what I love about it. Each song makes its point in a couple of minutes, and then the whole thing's over in 30, and I can't wait to go again. The melodies are penetrating, the instrumentals are dynamic and the whole thing just sounds so fresh and well... avant-garde.

I really am done now.

there is nothing avant-garde about this album. that isn't a personal attack on someone's character.

Yeah... I don't feel personally attacked.. we just have different views on what should be considered "avant-garde". Healthy discussion. All good.

Personally, I never understood the criticism over the length of the songs. Especially on a site like this where punk and hardcore is highly regarded. I know Charli's brand of pop is vastly different from punk/hardcore so the same metrics don't apply, but the whole "these songs are so short" criticism doesn't stick for me. If anything, I'd dislike it more if it were longer, especially on songs that are already thin on substance or catchiness ('Yeah', '2007', you want 'Rock Music' to be longer?)

There are things to criticize here, but this ain't one of them

To me, it's less to do with "oh these songs are too short" and more to do with "these songs could've been more fleshed out"

Nothing wrong with short songs - like you pointed out, there are other genres where short songs are the norm and don't get criticised. Hell, look at pretty much all of Joyce Manor's discography.

Maybe I'm not explaining my thoughts well, but short songs can work in certain contexts if they feel like a fulfilling enough experience with their short runtime. I think it's fair to say some of the Charli songs on this album would've benefitted from a little more length.

To me, it's less to do with "oh these songs are too short" and more to do with "these songs could've been more fleshed out"

I totally agree with this Platy, yet I don't think that the only solution for the songs to be further fleshed out is to give them more length. I count one or two exceptions to this, such as 'Wink Wink', which is so hooky (despite its stupid lyrics) and it stops just when it hits its 2 minute mark and it's begging for some sort of bridge or outro. I feel similarly about 'I'm Afraid'.

But to me, the rest don't need the fleshing-out in their runtime, but in their songwriting. 'Card Declined' repeats the chorus for most of its runtime, the themes of which echo other, more fleshed-out songs ('SS26', 'Persona') before throwing in a different song for its last minute. 'Yeah' is 15 seconds longer than 'Wink Wink' (i.e. a chorus longer) yet does nothing throughout its run, repeating "I don't wanna"'s and "Now I wanna feel it"'s with no catchy melody or production underneath. A lot has been written about 'Rock Music' so I won't dwell on it, but it sounds off; I see what she's going for, but the laughable lyrics matched with those plastic-sounding riffs start the album on the wrong foot. In fact, repurpose 'Yeah''s production and 'Rock Music''s lyrics and something better could be made up.

Personal nitpicking: I adore 'SS26' (maybe my favorite here along with 'Camera') but I'd love it even more if the guitars were somewhat grungier or more prominent. Another example of how the production also betrays some of the songs here.

That's why I agree with your assessment that "short songs can work in certain contexts if they feel like a fulfilling enough experience with their short runtime" but I don't think that, in Charli's case, most of the songs feel unfulfilling because they had more to say and just didn't have the length to do so. For me, they're unfulfilling because they do have the short length and still don't use it to leave an impact; she spends that time repeating the same lines and without a sticky melody beneath them.

Of course, that's for me. It clearly scratches an itch and feels hooky for many others and that's what matters at the end.

Hell, look at pretty much all of Joyce Manor's discography.

Speaking of which, I Used to Go to This Bar is still so good

Edit: sorry for the long spiel

Guys, if you wanted 2 minute pop songs that are actually good, just listen to radio pop hits from the 50s and 60s. The majority of those were under 3 minutes. Very avant-garde of them!

Some people lack education...

AI synopsis of avant-garde:

1) New Styles: Breaks old rules and tries completely different methods.

2) Challenges Norms: Pushes back against traditional tastes and popular culture.

3) Shock Value: Often receives criticism or confusion from the public when first seen.

Can anyone name a mainstream pop act who is making music quite like this either now or ever? Especially after a completely different style made them the star they are?

Didn't think so.

So yeah, I get you're all feeling confusion because your brassbound brains can't quite cope with all the rules Charli is breaking here, and you all wanted Brat Part 2, but I'm gonna keep enjoying the freshest pop release of the year in all its avante-garde glory...

As I said, some people lack education, so good thing I'm a teacher.
