I see nothing wrong with having a formula if you can build upon it in meaningful ways and still make consistently great music within those parameters. Crowbar is a good example of a band who has done this and really doesn't have a bad album from the ones I've heard (which is about 80-90% of their discog)

I would agree with that

I could also be desensitized cuz I love plenty of hardcore/metalcore bands many would consider generic. I think songwriting will always trump originality in my book though

I think originality and experimentation definitely have a very important place in music. Refinement of a tried-and-true formula is one thing, but when you talk about breaking new ground or teaching yourself to walk (musically) so other bands can run later, that is huge imo. There is lots of great stuff that builds on previous releases but nothing is truly as exciting to me as a certified fresh take on the genre i love that breaks entirely new ground. Stuff that hasn't been done before. Like first and second wave shit, nespithe, obscura, everything is fire, imperative imperceptible impulse. I absolutely live for that shit
As much as I love revisiting my classics, nothing beats discovering stuff like that

100% agreed brother, good point!

there's no 'one thing' that makes something good or not, different things can be good/bad/other in different ways.
i will say, if you are a metal fan (which i am), you have to have a low standard for artists just rinse repeating the same old shit over and over. but execution is just as valid as innovation, and thats why bands like Immo are still top of the pack over many other legacy bands
and its not exclusive to music either. most successful film directors and authors stick to what they know and focus on doing it well

Sure yeah, I don't think anyone was saying that

This was alright, but also a bit boring and bland, I think it's a 3.3 but maybe I'm just not in the mood for this kind of thing.

Not going to lie, I feel Immolation have been kind of dialling it in past few albums. Just more or less same riffs/ drum patterns/ pinch harmonics etc. You could take any song of this album, mix it with the another album from the past number of years and I guarantee you would never notice. They need that God hating urgency that’s been lack solely lacking.

Or you can just admit to yourself that you have zero personal thought process and you’re simply overrating something because it feels safe and won’t invite criticism from a bunch of faggy “self proclaimed music experts”.

Nah it’s just kind of meaningless and soulless. Not once do they try and build on an already unique, pissed of sound.
