I originally thought this would be as good as Sterm Un Drang, but I would say it's more on par with Sacrement or even Ashes of the Wake. I'm happy to finally be interested in this band again.

Bro thank god our political climate is the clusterfuck toilet water shit it is cause Randy's lyrics fucking feast off of it. The Killing Floor could have been a Bush-era track.

I walked your savior like a dog through his gilded door

At 23 kilohertz I called him to the floor

Unleash strategic chaos, a new world disorder

I'll roll you over in your grave and redraw the borders

1. Into Oblivion: very solid opener; feels like a mixture of current LoG and Sacrament-era. Grooves

2. Parasocial Christ: thrashier with some Ashes-era inspiration tucked in (Cruz makes good use of the toms on this); probably going to be a monster track when played live cause it wants to be a headbanger

3. Sepsis: listened to this plenty on release; a filthy sound that's been missing for a long fucking time; becomes standard fare LoG in the back half

4. The Killing Floor: Randy on his political soapbox spitting fire; a very tight and entertaining track; definite highlight of the album

5. El Vacio: nice melodic track; I would have killed for some more atmospherics though; this track is begging for some synths (remember the ocean sounds on Wrath?); kept thinking of Deftones while listening; honestly could be a skip on follow-up listens

6. St. Catherine’s Wheel: dynamic track; great riffs; tempo change-ups are fun; could have been a Sacrament b-side

7. Blunt Force Blues: solid single; sort of a shadow of classic LoG; GO!

8. Bully: it’s fine; probably the weakest track on the album; too nu-LoG for my tastes

9. A Thousand Years: cowbell is nice; stronger track than Bully but the formula is super obvious at this point

10. Devise/Destroy: decent closer; really using those instrumental breaks to their advantage; Randy sounds particularly filthy on this one.

Track-by-track thoughts after one listen. I disagree that this even sniffs their classics. It's the best album they've come out with since Wrath, don't get me wrong, and may be slightly above VII. I re-scored a few of the albums in reflection of this one. Solid 3.5 and I don't really anticipate budging on that.

Second listen thoughts: less interesting second time through. "Bully" is pretty reminiscent of their classic stuff. It's fine as a straightforward metal record; I always have love for the band, but invoking Palaces and Ashes is criminal hyperbole.

Damn, we are hearing very different things. The guitar work is more unorthodox in a style I associate with classic LoG. The song itself is much more interesting than the caveman metal the rest of the album is.

This is as good as modern-LOG can get. Got some big bangers on here. Got some weak shit too (title track, Blunt Force Blues). Overall tho it feels good to finally like a LOG album again even if none of it even gets close to being their best work.

Randy also sounds deranged and unhinged and pissed on here. What a fucking GOAT. Genuinely the coolest metal vocalist still going today

"Calling the title track and BFB weak is wild to me lol."

I feel like any band could've made those tracks man. Both just bored me to death and I've replayed them so many times tryna see if they click but nah they just don't hit at all.
