What exactly does metal need to progress toward? I'm not really understanding the argument. There are dozens of subgenres and lots of experimentation within each.

"It will not thrive. It will perish. And if you think that's a good thing. Take a good hard look in the mirror and try to deny your narcissistic tendencies."

Like... this has to be ragebait. I refuse to believe you're being genuine when you say shit like that lol

@Tundra regarding our narcissistic tendencies

I hear you, and I want to acknowledge where that feeling might be coming from. When someone has spent a long time feeling out of step with the broader consensus—especially in a genre they care about—it can start to feel less like a difference of opinion and more like being constantly misunderstood or talked over. That frustration is real, and it deserves to be named.

That said, framing disagreement about the current state of metal as narcissism is a pretty big psychological leap. Narcissistic tendencies aren’t about having different taste, optimism, or even bad arguments—they’re about persistent patterns of grandiosity, lack of empathy, and entitlement across many areas of life. Liking modern metal, defending it, or even being enthusiastic about it just… doesn’t meet that bar.

What’s more likely is something much more mundane and much less sinister: people are responding to different things. Some are invested in innovation, some in tradition, some in community, some in nostalgia. None of that requires pathological self-obsession—just different value systems and emotional attachments to music.

It might also be worth gently considering that when every disagreement starts to feel like a moral or psychological failing on the other person’s part, that can be a sign the conversation has shifted from “we hear music differently” to “I need my position to be unquestionably correct.” That’s an understandable impulse when you’re tired of arguing—but it’s not the same as being empirically right.

You’re absolutely allowed to think metal is in a bad place. You’re even allowed to think most people are wrong about it. But once disagreement itself is treated as evidence of narcissism, the discussion kind of stops being about music and starts being about protecting a worldview from challenge.

And honestly, that’s a lot of emotional weight to put on riffs and blast beats.

How did I first hear of metal? Oh yeah, it was the most mainstream bands out there. Metallica, Megadeth. If metal is not never mainstream again, who are going to be those gateway bands to get new listeners into the scene. Metallica can't be depended on forever to do that job. If no metal band is mainstream again, it will die because there will be no more gateway bands to get new listeners into the scene.

Tundra bro. Metal never died. And it never will. It has always survived. And it would do just as well without these awful pop bands pretending to be metal. Seriously, just because you're incorporating different genres into your music doesn't make it good or "innovative". Anyone could do that. Sleep Token are abysmal songwriters and that's what matters in the end.

Calling someone else's existence hollow when Sleep Token is your favorite bands is quite a statement. [2]

Also, how is Sleep Token the one progressing metal? And also, to what? Agreed with probably most people here that I do not give a damn if music is mainstream or not. I just want to inject wiggly air that gives me nice brain electrons.

if anything, heavy alternative bands like Sleep Token are the ones dragging metal down by completely redefining into something that barely resembles itself anymore. oh boy, recycled djent riffs and pop choruses. how innovative.

A band like Judas Priest is just as soft as Sleep Token. A song like Breaking the Law? Cmon... That is barely metal, yet everyone still calls it metal. Oh, you might say, "but Judas Priest have heavier songs too". Oh, might I suggest to The Summoning by Sleep Token? Or Look to Windward? Sleep Token are just like other mainstream metal bands that came before them. They have the accessible "soft" songs, and they also have the heavy hitters too.

The difference is that Judas Priest actually write riffs lol, you know, which is what makes metal metal.

I mean things that were seen as heavy music back in the 70s or 80s are now seen as soft rock... Music changes.

@kusangii That comes from the elitist philosophy where metalcore is not metal. Metalcore is metal, and guitar chugs are metal just like your token thrash metal riff.
