"hot take tim has honestly never been that amazing at writing riffs anyway. i love me some fuckin riffs but i was revisiting the big three all weekend and thats never really been whats made this band special. hes always written simple parts and they aint that different than they are here
in regards to myself aside good lord thats a nasty riff"
"In Regards To Myself is still one of my favorite riffs to go back and play every now and then... but yeah I think I've always preferred their simpler but melodic side of their guitar writing rather than technicality"
Tim didn't even write the riff for In Regards to Myself - Spencer did. Lmao.

I love Tim's guitar stuff though. Underoath songs are some of my favorites to play because he can make relatively simple stuff sound great. I'm Content With Losing has been a favorite of mine to play for like 15 years now because it's just fun and sounds awesome.

they certainly make the most with their limited economy and are fun to play, i just dont really buy that the way hes done that has changed drastically from back in the day to now. he's basically doing the same thing he's always done here
i think he mostly of any link in the band feels particularly chained to their chemistry and tightness in that moment since his parts arent as front and center

But what about Disam

tbf their musical chemistry and their personal chemistry are basically exactly at odds with each other at all times since litsos is one of the most locked in ive ever heard any band despite them all despising each other

That's why I'm blown that I think the rest of this album mostly sucks. The riffs are there but every song is ruined by something I don't like in one way or another.

They definitely have become awful at writing choruses and general composition and stuff its baffling

That's the thing, when it comes to chorus, even the past 2 albums had better ones, I feel. And compositionally, as a band gets older and evolves in it's understanding of their instruments and the studio, they theoretically should be able to make things less jarring and disjointed. That doesn't mean the songs themselves automatically get better, of course (quite often, "maturing" is a curse for a lot of heavy bands). But it should be enough to not make it seem like someone has just put together a bunch of different "blocks" together on a DAW, and called it songs.
As a parallel, we've recently had another example of a veteran metalcore band trying to do the modern/BMTH-inspired thing in what seems to be a very calculated, built-to-specs way, which was the latest Architects record. It's not the best thing they've ever done in any way, but it actually feels like there was some effort in making a polished, meticulously crafted "modern metalcore "record.

Haha, depending on your point of view, this may very well be Underoath's Kid A.
Also, I can't recall entirely, but I vaguely remember Tim saying at one point in an interview that he basically joined the band because he was able to play a few chords. I never got the impression that he was a stellar musician and I don't think he views himself that way either. Perhaps that's why some of his more simple and atmospheric work resonates with listeners. He's writing music from a standpoint of what sounds good or is fun to play, rather than what seems impressive. It's just a thought and I could be wrong though.

I think it’d be cute if I didn’t listen to any of their early shit and just let their last few records be my impression of them.
Son you call these riffs? These riffs are fucking ass

This might be a 2.5 with better production. It has a few interesting moments.

This album doesn't justify its own existence. They know nobody likes this crap, that's why they tour their old stuff. Feels like an attempt at relevance, but they're copying 5 year old gimmicks Code Orange and BMTH did.
