Deathspell Omega supremacy tbh, another black metal band that prominently features a nazi, but yknow, actually good.

With you on that tho venin, filosofem is dogshit and Burzum is overrated as fuck fr fr

You all crazy, Filosofem is a masterpiece of the genre and Burzum has at least three outstanding records. It's not for everybody though, that's for sure.

If you don't dig at least the first 4 Burzum albums then I gotta question whether or not you even like bm tbh. And this being #1 bm on RYM is laughable lmao.

never really understood categorizing this band as bm in the first place

I love a lot of bm acts and this guy's shrieks do absolutely nothing but irritate me. sounds like if a metalcore singer wanted to go bm or smth. that being said, the energy is there so I will try to give this a proper listen at some point

Eh, I don't know! To be honest black metal is all over the place like other genres and it's a sign of the times. I respect Burzum and oldschool black metal to death but I can't necessarily say I love it like newer more "clean" bm bands. I'm not really into the extreme lo-fi sounds of the genre and I get their appeal but it's a struggle for me. That being said though, yeah this being 1 on bm is laughable at RYM but I also find a lot of their ratings/albums to be a joke anyway. That site is more just better at database and lists so I use it for that. Interaction wise and album reaction, I much prefer it here.

That's not to say I don't like some lo-fi classic bm and such but everyone has their own taste as far as the genre goes. I just don't enjoy the purist takes anymore. Someone brought up Deathspell whom I love

“I do think i'd like this more if it weren't so compressed - total headache to get through due to the heavyhanded compression”

yeah, I just thought that’s what this band sounded like generally, but I can’t disagree with the general sentiment. Seems like a real lack of low-end too which I dislike, trebly af (probably why it all sounds so “epic”)

still, it’s not bad

Counterpoint: letting a Nazi like Varg fade away into obscurity instead of promoting him would be the best course of action

"i can't lie it is absurd, but for me it's like Filosofem should've never been the #1 anyway so i'm laughing at their expense"

tbf that's a completely reasonable sentiment ahahaha. filosofem is perhaps black metal's most overrated album - total snoozefest. hvis lyset tar oss is the only album from burzum i think is good but for obvious reasons i can't find myself enjoying it any more.

i get a lot of comparisons to burzum with my own music but they were never really a huge influence on how i crafted my songs - more like an 'influence by osmosis' because of how prominently other bands took notes. burzum's the epitome of a 'right place right time' band, dude struck just at the right time but compositionally his stuff doesn't doesn't stand up today at all where by comparison there's a bunch of albums from around the same time period i don't feel has aged quite so poorly.

i'm not mad about this taking the spot from filosofem by any means lol. but what i would say is that this album isn't a great representative of the genre due to black metal not being as strongly represented as screamo and hardcore in it. if this were someone's very first black metal record i highly doubt they'd come out of it knowing what black metal actually sounds like.

that's a me problem though lmao.

I do think burzum is a little overrated in the grand scheme of things. He wasn't a great musician and most burzum stuff isn't something that's wows me... but he had a unique take on black metal that pretty much is the origin of atmo black
