I disagree with you guys - Breaking All Illusions, Outcry, Bridges In The Sky, and Illumination Theory are all fantastic in my opinion.

ADTOE and Distance Over Time both clear this but this is getting overwanked to hell and back just because Portnoy. Idk if I like it better than black clouds but at least its better than SC or Octavarium. Agreed earlier that ballads are actually one of their strong suits. The almost forced feeling longer/complex songs are now hindered by trying to do note for note nostalgia bait.

@titan: I haven’t listened to all those songs in aaaages, and they’re good but Breaking All Illusions is probably the only one I’d really go back to now
@kal: agreeed, Wits End is GREAT
@troy: yeah I hear you, the songs are good but they don’t need to be so long. They could have shaved 10 minutes off this album imo

Personally I think most of the 10 minute songs in the Mangini era are fine. It’s the 20 minute ones that fall apart. Illumination Theory is one of the worst songs they’ve ever done.

Illumination Theory is not my favorite but a lot that might be due to the production being absolute ass.

@Alex I was gonna say, Lost Not Forgotten is the best long song on that album after Breaking All Illusions

Breaking All Illusions is legit a top 10 dt song imo so damn good. The Far From Heaven callback, which mirrors the Wait for Sleep callback in Learning to Live, is how you do the nostalgia bait right since it's still implemented different enough

Hang on, this actually might be a certified banger. Most i've listened to a new DT album in its first week since maybe SC.

For me, ADTOE was their best Mangini era album and so deserving as a whole when compared to their earlier output.

I'm not sure about that. I always was divided between this one and DOT. Anyway I think that AVFTTOTW is in the same level or very close.

@Titan, agreed in terms of the typical dream theater album that ADTOE was their best since Train of Thought, Although I do have soft spot for DoT actually having relatively concise songwriting.
@AlexKzillion ADTOE would benefit so much from a remaster agreed.
