Is Portishead ever going to be a thing again or has that ship sailed?

Still moored in the dock I reckon but incapable of unfurling the sails.

I’m done expecting anything. It seems unlikely at this stage.
Arguably the most consistent band of all time (for a lack of “duds” generally, or song-by-song average), so keeping their legacy intact isn’t necessarily the worst decision. Selfishly, I’d love new material just to see what happens, but if their hearts aren’t in it, then doing so would be daft
As for this I don’t return to it. Probably overrating it, unfortunately.

Yeah, this is enjoyable but it stands on its own and doesn't really have the same feel as a Portis record. Not that I was expecting a new one but it'd be a nice surprise just to see how they would sound now. Sometimes it's better to be left wanting anyway.

definitely think I wanted new Beth material so badly that I was initially enchanted beyond reasonable comprehension lol… maybe just to hear her voice again? There are some initially exciting ideas that unfortunately wore of a little, admittedly
I think it’s also a very dark record and you maybe need a certain mindset going in. I was in that place when this was released
and yeah I’d sacrifice this for a Portishead album at “80% quality of their worst LP”

@demo.
You don’t wear your Sunday best all the time, for the occasional moments this gets played the moment becomes special.
Guarantee you listen to this again and it will be better than when you last heard it.

Omg I'm so afraid of liking things, beacause those things move and may someday stab me in the back when I'm least expecting.

Emotions change with time, feelings for albums with them. Some depressing albums i love even when I'm not, I hold bad memories with some otherwise upbeat albums. Just give it time, especially if it moved you before. I think that's what matters most.

this had a muted initial impact and very little staying power for me, will probably give it in another year or two as a direct result of there still not being any new portishead. got many other go-tos for the ol waiflike spook folk

I (think? I) agree with the mean consensus on this page viz., album is not one to which I obsessively return, nor does it have any track(s) that standout such that I find myself playing them on repeat or whatever. But the few times I have returned to it over the past year-ish, it has improved, as a whole, and blows me away with its consistency, and how quality each track is. In many ways it does feel/sound like a spiritual progression from THIRD - the landing point of the arc. Sure it might be "missing" qualities that make it a "Portishead" album, but you could literally say the same thing about THIRD relative to s/t and DUMMY, right?
Idk. Album is amazing and Beth is mommy.
