Something being a gimmick doesn't preclude quality. Chamber metal is back, baby.

they've done chamber stuff on every single EP or LP they've yet put out, how many more releases do they need under the belt before it's no longer a gimmick, or are certain atypical conventions within a given musical style just perma-relegated to the gimmick category
|
| |
are you suggesting that you've never come across a gimmick with lorge longevity?
PoG's style hoppin song writin log jammin is definitely within the realm of janky stoner logic where every bold decision they make comes off as a gimmick and repetition ain't gonna cushion this

I’ve always thought of gimmicks as more physical things as opposed to having to do with the actual music but that’s just me. Cause then at what point are defining characteristics of certain genres and sub genres also classifiable as gimmicks.

do we have thoughts on the new Sleepwalkers?'
Fking tremendous like everything they do but even for them pretty different that previous releases. Still digesting it.

"are you suggesting that you've never come across a gimmick with lorge longevity?"
i think longevity, and particularly for very niche "gimmicks" that already don't have much pull relatively speaking, at least to me, speaks to a genuine effort more so than a band just doing something bold for the sake of being bold. like, is there a way for thanti to use chamber in a sense you wouldn't deem a gimmick? it seems like a genuine effort to me and i get the impression (correct me as required) you are dubbing it a gimmick because there's some executional flaw or you just don't like the approach. i'm struggling to find any definitions of the term that aren't steeped heavily in being a devious, conniving mfer trying to make bank off an uncharacteristic play.

| |
ohhhh you're talking about this band and thinking I'm also talking about this band shit fuck, get you to that last page boio! fwiw i do found this album's approach to Disconcerting Shit clunky and overbearing, but not in a way I'd call gimmicky (and the non-metal stuff is actively on point from what i recall)
bold for the sake of being bold and executionally flawed are, however, excellent descriptions of why Portrayal of Guilt come off as a bunch of mawkish edge-addled gimmick stooges

aw shit my bad! thanks for clarifying, would it kill me to read words with my eyes
yet to listen to portrayal of guilt and that yet is ever growing with this newfound info, cheers bby

As I'm spinning this for like the 7th time I gotta say I feel kind of frustrated because this album could have been truly magnificent. First two tracks are groundbreaking material, worthy of a 5 rating, but the albums starts to lose that level of quality from that point on, to the point it feels very front loaded.
