"great band before matriarch"

seconded hard. they were honestly pretty unique until that album. I don't know anything that sounds like The Common Man's Collapse or [id]

smae brother! circle of contempt gets p close but that's all top of mind. little proggy but still djent with some balls and a bit raw. they never got enough respect.

More "djent" needed to follow in Veil's footsteps by making the death metal/deathcore parts more apparent. Gave them a lot of character on those early releases and they crushed live

brandon is one of my fav vocalists, shame he just hung it up. very distinct tone.

I think I only heard it when it dropped so I will def revisit. There were a lot of hidden gems in the pre-Periphery era

djent had such early promise but it just turned into sterile, neutered tundra-core. there aren't many djent albums with that raw unpolished aggression which is where i think it shines the most.

djent rules with and without polish

this band was for sure better with brandon, but it all rules

i can't agree, i think after brandon left they trend hopped and became exactly what is wrong with the genre plus paved the way for even more terrible clones of clones

I saw Periphery live at one of the Summer Slaughters and concluded the direction the genre was going in was not for me. Maybe I just haven't heard the good shit though

theres an abundance of good shit. in pretty much every style of music i prefer more pristine production anyway and it benefits djents aesthetics perfectly because its so rhythmic and quantized. the way the genre went in was perfect for me for the most part and most of its better records came out in the 2010s imo

yeah i think that is the divide. it's all so neutered and lifeless to me. very predictable and just dull.
