At this point you come to expect the same kinda riffing. I find myself preferring the more melodic cuts over the "heavy" stuff (hence P3) and lyrically this album is hard to get a good grasp on especially. You could tell Spencer was probably in love and had lost love circa P3 and P4 but I don't even hear a single "misery" on this album, "Wax Wings" goes on about machines or something lol
"Thanks Nobuo is right there bruh" that's definitely the closest we get but it doesn't have any lyrical motifs I latch onto after like 5-6 listens so far.

"they have been writing the same kind of riffs since the debut."
hmm I'd say juggernaut is when they really locked into the formula we've gotten on every album since
p1 especially stands out being a purely misha creation. they never really wrote anything like ow my feelings and zyglrox again for instance
p2 is a funky middle ground where there's still a decent amount of old bulb stuff and obvious misha 0s everywhere but mark's influence really comes through on stuff like scarlet and gods and they hadn't quite found the right mix. also don't really hear a ton of jake here besides solos and electronics
jugg is really they became a united front imo

After seeing these guys last night, I can safely say a controversial opinion on Sputnik.
Ahem... Periphery is a good band.

All jokes aside Reptile was an absolute spectacle live. For a 16 minute song I wasn't bored for a single second of it. These guys look like they have so much fun on stage too, Misha couldn't stop smiling. Also Jake does backing vocals now and he sounds awesome. But most of all, Spencer is just unreal. The high notes this dude can hit is honestly ridiculous. Great show.
I also have a newfound appreciation for Atropos after seeing it in person. Song went too hard

"this is like the taylor swiftening except the call is coming from inside the house"
this is a witch hunt and i wanna see some bans dropped. cull those plebs
"There's just no variation in that sound whatsoever to me."
lol who gives a shit, their tones are on point, their songwriting isn't jank and they're heavy as balls (which the meme tribute song on this album mistakes for choking on balls + gross overproduction)
honestly i can't think of a better taste filter than presenting an audience with a good version of a good thing and a shittier version of a good thing and watching which they naturally gravitate towards

i don't even know what you're trying to say and also variation is pretty important to keep it from getting boring

thank you for that weigh-in, deathbat. go listen to ambient until your power level is high enough to unlock opening past pages of active threads

"misha's one of the most creatively bankrupt guitarists of all time"
I was going to talk about the 8 solo albums he dropped in 2020, all of which were positively received, but ya know what I think I actually won't take the bait this time

Good album but rough around the edjentes.

not that i have the faintest intention of hearing any of those records to test this theory, but it's a hell of a lot easier to spam out 8 albums off the back of creative bankruptcy than from burgeoning originality (this is the Mooncat story, part VI coming soon!)

“ lol who gives a shit… their songwriting isn't jank”
I agree with this (the rest too). While some variation can be nice, it doesn’t mean much if the songwriting is ass. Good songwriting will keep me listening for sure, regardless of any potentially generic qualities

> it's a hell of a lot easier to spam out 8 albums off the back of creative bankruptcy
in theory that could be true, but the theory kinda fails when once again these albums were all positively received. Creatively bankrupt musicians can't crank out 8 decent-to-great album like it's nothin. it's a laughably stupid take either way when the industry is dominated by dudes who got rich playing power chords
