It is more melodic for sure. Just never wanted to revisit it after 2-3 listens. Couple standout tracks and some snoozers

I've never really paid much attention to this band before but this is really cool. May have to check the rest of their discography out.

Same here Confessed, been doing a dive down their stuff, none of their albums so far resonated with me like this has
So far listened to In Times, E, Isa, couple of songs from Axioma, Ruun (some of these before listening to Heimdal, some only after) interesting stuff, but it didn't get me hooked. It all just made me want to go back to this one. Heimdal really feels like they have their own distinct voice and I'm all here for it, many of the other ones felt a bit disjointed whereas this feels like everything's in its right place

Sure, Flug there's something there
But also each song on this album is an adventure in itself but also a part of a greater whole which I rarely felt on the other ones. There's also the seamless blend of styles and the production that gives it a real epic feel which was hit or miss for me on the other records I mentioned. Also, the songwriting is at times deceptively simpler on the surface but there's just so much awesomeness going on. Each song has a certain drive and there's tons of soundscapes that just fit so fucking satisfyingly. Really one of my favorite releases in the past 2 years and it's by a "new" band for me which is doubly awesomesauce

StormChaser I noticed you didn't mention RIITIIR and would highly recommend it, it's exactly what filled the heavy Opeth void for me in like 2014 when I discovered them and is still probably my favorite of theirs (I still need to check this latest one out though oop)

Thanks Birbman, sad you're not feeling it
Jizz, I only listened to the opener and lazily went on to the next one thinking there would be more immediate impact elsewhere. I do plan to return to it though

AOTY contender fs.
I have to agree with some of the patronizing comments from Mr. Birb tho. On one hand there's a clear biased view which may (or may not) be an obstacle to embrace their most prog/ genre bending piece - this one (in many ways). On the other hand I don't think its an easy band for a discogrun, cause all their albums need to settle and to claim this as their best its maybe a bold statement (I mean this one also seems disjointed on the first couple of spins). I wish I have the time to check em out properly...specially the early pre axioma ones, cause right now I also feel the urge of keep coming back to this one.

I'm revisiting a portion of their discog instead of diving right into this (even tho I have heard many before, still think it's needed). The hype for this may cause impatience eventually. We'll see.

OMFG I'm such a fan of The Eternal Sea. Its like an improved/ enslaved Jaguar God. The bass intro is very Krallice, the synths after the "verse" around 2'50 are soooo CoL. Lol uuugghh I jizz to this. This song needed to be like 10 minutes plus. Damn

Axioma is currently my fave Enslaved with Vikingligr/Frost taking 'joint 2nd', but there are certainly gaps in my knowledge. Their 'transitional' era (Eld > Monumension) is untouched, I missed Ruun for some reason and didn't check E or In Times after being disappointed with RIITIIR. Utgard was tricky to crack for me. Some I remember a lot more than others.
Great live band btw, so I did hear some In Times material as it was the tour for that album.

love, it's pronounced patro... oh wait, no that's the correct version carry on
Personally, I prefer music that I mysteriously cannot connect to, distant, untouchable and alienating. Far from my grasp.

The Eternal Sea is really fucking special, but so is almost every song on here
Also, I wasn't calling this the best Enslaved since I've hardly listened to a third of their discog and I'm obviously not qualified to make that judgement
What I was saying however is that nothing this band has done previously (I've tried listening like 2 years ago to some of their top-rated shit) hooked me and made me want to do a deep dive into their stuff, and this most definitely made me a fan. If it's the only album I end up liking as a whole from these guys, it'll be enough for me, that's how good and satisfying I find this is for me
Also, this never felt disjointed in the slightest to me, from the first listen

Best Enslaved since RIITIIR tbh

that album made me stop listening to them, lol
Then I remembered they were previously pretty darn good, so I have forgiven them for this misdemeanour
