"The unfortunate reality is that I listened to Vaxis I yesterday and the only thing stuck in my head for the next day after listening to the full album was: "run, run, run, run, run like a son of a gun""

It's a dumb line but at least it's catchy. I'd be lying if I said I didn't sing along to it live.

Regarding "you're selling out to be in" - I think it's a line that someone in middle school would write and I think just because it doesn't rhyme with the rest of the chorus it makes it stand out so much more. It's jarring and there's not really any hook to it. The chorus of The Hard Sell would be awesome if not for that line cause I love the guitars chugging heavily in it. The verses are meh. Again, I feel like people always say WTF??? when I say I don't like Descension so I'm not going to try swaying any opinions here.

Odal, I'm not sure how to explain it but I think it's just the tone of those lines and how they (don't) fit into the songs. "Bad boy" is kind of cheesy but the way it's sung and how it fits the tone of the song...it just works for me but I can't say I love NWFT either. Plus it's only two words instead of a whole line.

I think the lines I have issue with just highlight how they're a far cry from stuff like "still recorded were the words that dribbled out his kiss" and other creative poetic lines that Claudio used to pen. They're too butt rocky and I don't like when my favorite bands do butt rock.

I'm not wed to 'Descension' but the highlights are just pure cheese entertainment for me. In the context of "The Hard Sell" as a whole, I really can't find myself getting taken out of the song by one line. You're either along for the ride if it clicks or you're not, which is fair.

Oh totally, Claudio is capable of much better but there' nothing particularly egregious to me about that line or delivery in The Hard Sell. The whole song has such a ridiculous swagger to it and is constantly one-upping itself in over-the-topness. Like, the whole delivery of the second verse with its stop-starts just makes me belly laugh damn near every time I hear it, in a good way. It's like the most basic, butt rock-y chorus you could get with the chugs, but it's such a good time. To me, it just sounds like they are having a good time and having a lot of fun. He clearly wasn't trying to be super artsy like a "words dribbled out his kiss" line.

Claudio's always been capable of cringe lines "I have no luck with girls" "Die white girls""Jessie Bad boy just come look at what your brother did to that girl's precious little whore of a body", but these lines are almost always super tongue-in-cheek and I think that's what the hard sell has going for it

I've never had issues with the lines from Backend of Forever and Al the Killer since they're character lines from someone that's clearly fucked up. Sort of an incel before that was even a term. Lol.

Yeah but I'm pretty sure that was Claudio just veiling himself behind the story, he just wasn't as open to admitting that back then as he is now.

I think Gravity's Union is top tier prog Coheed. The build up and ending and then the lead guitar coming in blows me away every time. The lyrical concept being based around "What would happen if my significant other dies/gets badly injured in a car wreck?" is a super real and relatable subject matter that lends so well to the feel of the music too. I think Afterman would definitely have benefitted from being trimmed down to one album, but I actually like Descension more than Ascension and didn't know people really hated on either of them a lot.

Finally heard this on proper speakers and I can say it's truly their best since Afterman Ascension. Even though this doesn't have a Domino the Destitute, it's more exciting and consistent -- hell, I might enjoy this even more.

Might have to 4.5 this. The only thing I don't like about the album is that goofy ass Disney Presents: Stranger Things album cover.

Like I counted at least 8 people/entities

It feels like one of those pictures where they ask how many things you can see and it's always even more than the clutter that initially meets the eye

Yeah there's way too much going on. I'm a sucker for clean and simple album art so this is rough to look at.

It's hard for me to say this is their best album since *insert previous album here*, but it's the most satisfied I've been with my initial impressions of one of their albums since GA:1. That's probably more to do with overblown expectations following GA:1 and them releasing the best songs as first singles (Domino and Dark Sentencer) than anything else though.

The album ends on such a strong note with the 3 final songs that it leaves a great lasting impression.

Yeah "best since" statements are always a bit iffy, but I'm this case I think it's actually justified. I could also see it being my favorite since Good Apollo. Coheed has always been a great but very inconsistent band in my eyes, but it all came together for them here. Not a bad song and some absolutely breathtaking/adrenaline-pumping heights.

I won’t make any “best since” statements. I’ll just say this blew away my expectations because this is great and fun while I found Vaxis I very dull and boring (other than The Darker Sentence which ripped)

My favorite song from Vaxis I was Old Flames and there are several songs here that blow that one away. I did find the callbacks to it pretty awesome, though.

Coheed and expectations are always a fickle thing.

There's a crowd who were disappointed in NWFT

There's a crowd who were disappointed in YOTBR

There's a crowd who were disappointed in Descension.

There's a crowd who were disappointed in CBTS (they are right though lol)

There's a crowd who are disappointed in this.

Coheed has earned so much good will that going in with no expectations but trusting that they will deliver is the way
