All of the cannibal puns in Strangers are so brilliantly morbid, but “How funny, I never considered myself tough” has to be the pick of the bunch

yeah that one's wild. one thing i love about 'strangers' is how the repeated 'am i making you feel sick?' is like the only moment on the record ethel appears to wish some kind of discomfort/misfortune upon someone (even with everything she's been through).. it's like being cannibalised was the last straw, and even then it's wrapped in hopes of getting close to someone. fuck lol (i hope it has been long enough to start dissecting stuff like this)

The P4K review of this is terrible, JFC. The whole thing is basically “Boohoo it’s too slow/long and there aren’t enough pop songs.” It feels like the reviewer was rushed and only listened to the album a couple of times - they even get the album length wrong (said it was 90 minutes). Pretty embarrassingly thin coverage for an artist they seemed to be hyping up.

"Here she’s more of a tragic heroine in a doomed romance."
lmao scuse me? weird review indeed, i get not enjoying the record bc of its pacing or whatever, but saying that the story "would benefit from a few more raw thrills" is just like.. not true

Right like on a personal level the opinion isn’t the issue it just seems like really poor analysis for a professional review.

personally I'd like the most moody americana bits but only across a 45 minute album and chop the pop...but that's me, the anti-P4k I guess

2. Sun Bleached Flies
3. Thoroughfare
4. American Teenager
5. A House in Nebraska
6. Strangers
7. Hard Times
8. Televangelism
9. Family Tree (Intro)
10. Family Tree
11. Western Nights
12. Gibson Girl
13. August Underground

Almost the opposite of my ranking, other than Thoroughfare I also rank about the same
Can't remember August Underground at all so will check now

I think the sticking point for most folks itt will be how low I put Family Tree. It's not that I don't think it's good, I just think it drags a little bit at times and I slightly prefer the intro for some reason. To me this album really turns a corner at Ptolemaea -- that track is downright bone-chilling and sets into motion the album's glorious closing sequence. I think it's possibly the most important song to the album's overall flow. August Underground is fine but I think it plays like something of an extended outro to Ptolomaea.
