I listened to the Libertines (?) recently, as they'd mounted 'a comeback' and there was always a hoo hah around them in the UK press, I also had listened to them a little bit back in the day so knew a little of what to expect.

So went back to the old albums too, gave them a chance. Pitiful stuff.

Fontaines ring true and I'd have them above all the following darlings:

The Libertines

IDLES

Bloc Party

The Strokes

The White Stripes

Arctic Monkeys

Interpol

Broken Social Scene

Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Spoon

Not quite the Arcade Fire yet but it's not beyond the realms...

Wouldn't be surprised if one or two there cause a wince but that's how I'm feeling it, despite liking at least some of the material by all those bands.

I think they're a breath of fresh air tbh

Yep. I’m with ya doof.

I’d still like to see the Monkeys to be fair just for the fuck of it but Fontaines are definitely something with a bit more oomph.

These guys are probably among the best in the crop of 2010s "trve post-punk revival" shite bands. They got hits, they got misses. More than I can ask for for most of their ilk.

AM I don’t think can be allowed to ride off the coattails of their first couple albums, same goes with interpol and to a lesser extent the strokey boys

indie will always have a place in my heart but it’s not something I actively seek out anymore

having said that, the likes of libertines, white stripes, courteeners and the like have never been a bit of me

You've got a point but it's probably too soon to say they edged spoon, probably can only make that comparison once fontaines have a few more albums under their belt

If the new one is equally excellent then I think we’re at the point they have more essential albums than Spoon for me.

As I said, I do enjoy most of those bands, and individual albums I rate highly - but just something about the aura of this band, their power, they already connect a bit more as an overall proposition.

fontaines dc vs the white stripes vs broken social scene vs spoon

while I can easily rank them (1>3>4>2), they are still so different in style it feels weird putting them under the same umbrella

yet, neither can escape the "indie" label so there you go, why am I even saying this?

but I'll say this: spoon is the best dad rock indie band ever

I really like fontaines and they are in that "cool" phase, but Girls Can Tell, Kill the Moonlight and Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga are easily better than any Fontaines record.

I have to make a confession: I’ve never rated a Spoon album over a 3.5.

I think they’re a little workmanlike in general.

I have discog dived them and ‘Ga x5’ has been in my life about 20 years now…but not a special band for me.

Lol fair enough. Fontaines are awesome but I don't think their work has the same replay value as those three albums, they're moving but they earn that response in a subtle way that few bands can.

"I’ve never rated a Spoon album over a 3.5"

Me neither, but they're such an incredibly consistent band. Spoon's a bit of a guilty pleasure to me. Sounds like generic indie rock, little-to-no experimentation, lacking the spark/energy I look for in indie, but they're so catchy. Polished and professional.

gabba, true thats what they have going for them - Gimme, Soul and Tranference are roughly speaking about as good as the three mentioned by fogza for me. So a lot of 3.5s

From that list of bands they only have three albums I rate over 3.5…Silent Alarm, You Forgot It and Turn on the Bright Lights. I’m quite tough on indie.

For me the level of craft and songwriting elevates spoon way above generic indie. Kill the moonlight is an absolute masterclass in finding the essence of your sound and adding nothing that doesn't need to be in the song

For better and worse Spoon truly are the ‘thinking man’s indie’

Find them a bit bloodless I guess, and the vocals a bit mannered

The word ‘fussy’ seems appropriate.

Overall a good listen though don’t get me wrong

dad-indie, cerebral rather than visceral, completely avoiding organs below the waist

but that's not necessarily a bad thing

I guess I must be in the minority in this thread but just because a band runs a tight ship doesn't mean it's bloodless. Still, Fontaine's are great. If I had to pick which band to see live at this point in time I'd definitely see Fontaines over Spoon, they're magic live

I just look at doof's list and see a bunch of tragic bands

there are levels though, admittedly. The Libertines would place last

most I actually thought were at minimum okay, at one point or another

Silent Alarm is still worth an occasional blast and I don't hate it when The Strokes enters my earholes unintentionally (wouldn't go out of me way like, but yeah). BSS MIGHT be alright, I liked them once upon a time. I'm not sure if I'll ever return now though

And yeah, Arcade Fire clears the lot quite easily
