I’ll have to try Billions again trying to ignore my anticipation for the childrens choir 😂
Have you heard the flume track flag?

Charli might be better suited as an artist/personality type for a certain type of sound or aesthetic or whatever, but it’s not like she came to stand in opposition of the career she tracked for ten years. Whatever label-mandated PR speak helps alleviate the panic over her auteur status, but pretty obvious she just likes all sort of pop trappings.

Sorry for being unpleasant, I have forgotten that my paragraph spiels are where I appear most unthreatening

You could be 100% right, and regardless of her intent if her label pushed this direction and it wasn’t a wilful dilution all the better because although I don’t think she’s on the same level as Caroline as an ~artist~ I admire Charli as a personality within pop and think that her making it big is a huge net positive for the industry.
It’s just my opinion that this comes off a bit sell-out-y, and part of that might be disappointment speaking.

My favourite thing about Charli has always been that she seems to be really capable of bringing less mainstream influences into the fold and that’s exciting. Maybe Charli (the alb) was a sign that this album was eventually imminent in retrospect, but I thought it still had an edge to it. The edges are sanded off on this one

Sellout? Does Charli really need to “sellout”
|
| |
She definitely doesn’t “need” to imo, tho I’m certain we mean that in different ways 😂
Another thing that irks me about this alb is that it feels a couple years too late. It sounds like she is trying to milk the last few drops out of a pop fad that was undeniably captivating a couple years ago, but now just feels a bit tired.
Idk ima listen to the new Banks album see if that’s good
|
| |
It definitely has the feel of “if I gotta do this, I am really gonna do it” which speaks to both sides: she is writing in a radio space she has been engineered to seem outside of or perhaps too good for, while showcasing why it is tbh tbqf imo markedly better than the contemporaries it invokes song after song. And at a lean half-hour… idk, seems right on time to me.

"Have you heard the flume track flag?"
No??? I didn't know he put out a new song with her. Will check.

“ definitely has the feel of “if I gotta do this, I am really gonna do it” ”
This actually feels very astute
@flag I’m obsessed with it. I kind of fell out of love with flume but I preordered the deluxe vinyl for that song alone. It was not cheap 😂

I really liked Hi This is Flume, but yeah this song is pretty cool too, pretty chill, didn't know he had an album coming!

Yeah the mixtape restored my faith a bit.
There’s only one other single aside from that so far but it is also good, tho not on the same level.
The features list for the alb is certified minty fresh.

Damon Albarn interesting

That one will certainly go one of two ways 😂

Oklou? I have never even feigned interest for a Flume track but this album is of sudden major interest.
|

Im fucking obsessed with her
She came through town opening for Caroline a few months ago and I had no idea. I saw Carol was coming and Although I think She is a star I don’t love her music consistently enough that I felt compelled to investigate further and I’ve been kicking myself ever since.
You should give that Caroline single I’ve been talking about a shot Plane
|
| |
LOL I type that and then push shuffle on my 33 hour long Spotify playlist right after and the first thing that plays is Oklou
|
| |
I missed the Oklou/Caroline show because it was too close to the holiday for my comfort, but it’s a stellar line-up. Savvy coupling. I gave that Flume track a spin, it was wilder than I anticipated. Nervy stuff.

Yeah man, I’m super proud of him. Very promising.

I thought Crash turned out way better than the singles suggested. Beg for You and Good Ones are probably two of the least interesting tracks here, and yet they are the two most popular....kinda weird.
I think this album was just as much Charli's decision as it was the label's, sort of a big "one last job" collab to make them the most money and get her profile to where she'd like it to be in order to have the freedom to whatever with her next move. I think it's a great album, and a nice full circle moment to the beginning of her career. I'm just not seeing it as a vapid album the way some do as it's clear that she is a student of the game and just loves pop music. Moments like Constant Repeat and Yuck are just pure ecstasy. I'm seeing her with Magdalena Bay next week and then the next day I'm seeing Rina Sawayama. Gonna be an amazing pop weekend
