That’s all a given. You can dismiss any form of criticism of any kind of art by saying just that, which effectively ends all discussion of art. My experience of music is relative to myself and myself only. I can’t speak with any sort of objectivity or from any perspective besides my own. I’m simply trying to articulate my feelings of why I may have outgrew them. They aren’t assumptions, they are just illustrations of what their process over the last decade has sounded like to me

@bob haven’t listened to this one and wasn’t planning on it

Sorry this isn't really relevant to the conversation but this is probably my favorite AnCo aside from Fall Be Kind
(Coming from someone who didn't grow up listening to them and has no attachment to their classics)

Painting With troubles Ryus’ narrative and this one troubles yours imo Pots, though I doubt you’d like it much. But the spastic elements that make PW so obnoxious to people like you to me are proof they’re not resting on the laurels of a homogenized sound and the chilled out dead worship of this album to me couldn’t really be squared away with the Santa-is-real aesthetic, it’s pretty relaxed and middle aged-ish to me

Do you want me to listen to it and see if it changes my mind?

“ But the spastic elements that make PW so obnoxious to people like you”
Lol speaking of assumptions!
That’s definitely not how I would articulate my feelings of PW
Or did you mean ryus with that note?

No, I figured that’s what you disliked about it: Jared said “the burglars” gave him actual anxiety
|

Oh no, that’s not what my experience was at all. That was released in what, 2016? So I’d need to revisit to articulate what I disliked about it so much but the experience I remember was more that it felt like a passionless, half finished husk of a record.

I’m just going to point out the irony of you saying this troubles my Santa Claus narrative when literally the opening three seconds sound like the beginning to a Christmas carol

I think the songwriting on Painting With, the chords-and-melody stuff, is kinda wack all told. But it’s an interesting test case with this album because they’re so different: ones people loop them into the same downfall narrative I’m inclined to start thinking along the lines of anthracks. Sometimes I feel like we project our stress about how a discography is going onto artists, and then I do think anthracks is right that the perception can start to color things a bit too much. I think it’s fair to say both that animal collective are not releasing the same child’s-play fake sandbox act every time, nor that they are purely trending into old-man psychedelia. Nor do I sense they care about a lot of stuff we might think they do. They just don’t quite have the juice anymore. But I’m listening to the single and do really like it on the whole. It feels more exciting to me than anything from the prior 3. Listen to this if you want pots lol idk it’s pretty good not a huge rec from me. Def different from PW

this actually isn't that bad ppots, but it's kinda long. czech a couple of the singles tbh

“ They just don’t quite have the juice anymore”
Everything I’ve said is just a round about way of explaining why it feels this way. I happen to express myself with a lot of hyperbole and dramatic emphasis but the speculation is just to encourage discussion which is exactly what we are on the site for!

My first impressions of this so far is that it isn’t offensively terrible at all like painting with was but I’m also pretty bored, will reflect on if this changes my ~narrative~

i think this album is kinda boring too I just think it doesn’t seem like the work of people who are acting like crazy lil children for a rapt audience of millennials who also want to feel that way. Painting With sure

So far you’re right, it sounds like old man AnCo and even if I don’t really like it, I do respect it
|

It’s reeeaaaallllly boring tho

Strung with everything sounds like something that would play at your local legion

Strung with everything sounds like phish, kinda like it but the ending is embarrassing along the lines of peacebone or monkey riches climaxes just with ahhhhh instead of AHHHHHH

I only know one phish song by name and it sounds nothing like that but still.
